My two oldest cats who are both over 18 now (Winston and Teacake) both have gingivitis and suffer a lot with bad breath and gum disease. The vet has recommended that I brush their teth with some toothpaste which is especially formulated for both dogs and cats and this is Virbac Animal Health Poultry Enzymatic Toothpaste. This comes in a tube containing 70g of animal toothpaste and I buy this from the vet for a few pounds. I don’t have to buy it very often though, which is a good job because although I have three cats in total I only use it on the two oldest ones and I only ever need to use a little bit so it lasts me a long time. I pay about £4 for this size tube.

My vet told me that this is excellent toothpaste for my aging cats because it contains special enzymes which stop the plaque from forming and causing the nasty gum disease. It is poultry flavoured and my two cats seem to really enjoy me cleaning their teeth. My oldest cat Winston only has four front teeth left so cleaning his is very quick and easy, but the other one has all of her teeth and she is not so keen so it is a bit of a struggle to get her to keep still for long enough.

The toothpaste does not smell of anything really and it does not smell nasty like cat food does. The cats seem to lick their lips a lot and purr sometimes as I am cleaning their teeth so they must quite enjoy it, I think. I clean them about twice a week and I think they benefit from this cleaning time and the vet has said he thinks it is doing them some good.

I think it is worth cleaning your dog’s or cat’s teeth if you have the patience and they will thank you for it later. I do think this toothpaste is worth the money but I am glad I only have to clean the two of them and that the youngest one will get away with any cleaning for a little while longer yet.
