Advantages Advantages Wide range of programmes; easy recording; picture & sound quality; 'free' HD

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not quite the latest set top box functionality; can freeze and quite slow to reboot

When our combined DVD/VHS recorder finally died a death some time ago we needed to replace it as soon as possible, preferably with something a bit more up to date. Upgrading our existing cable set top box solved the problem; it also had a number of other significant benefits. The main enhancements are: 1. Access to High Definition (HD) channels 2. Superior TV recording facilities and usability 3. Easy access to ‘TV on demand’ (catch-up programmes & films) 4. Ability to pause/rewind live TV programmes A better viewing experience Our overall experience has been a general improvement in the ... more

    Advantages Advantages records tv easily

Disadvantages Disadvantages occassionally misses the end of a programme

When I switched from Sky to Virgin media, the main reason I switched was because of the quality of the Virgin + box. Without bad mouthing Sky, I simply was not happy with their services and thought that it was time for a change. I think I ended up paying a connection fee for the set up but the subscription was discounted for three months. The box I received was the Virgin + HD box. The access to the HD channels is free compared to Sky where you pay a fee. Description The Virgin + box is black and slim with a number of buttons on the front and a large easy to read LCD display. The set up comes ... more

Advantages Advantages record 2 shows while watching a third, on demand

Disadvantages Disadvantages responsiveness to the remote is poor

The Virgin V+ HD box is a great TV service. With this box you can pause and rewind live TV, you can also record up to 2 programmes at one time, while watching another. I also allows you to watch HD channels and this comes at no extra cost with the XL package unlike the sky service. The V+ box has a hard drive of 160 GB which is the equivalent of approximately 80 hours of recording in standard definition. The amount of hard drive space is more than enough for most people, as long as you don't keep your programmes on there for ages you are unlikely to run out of space. Recording is very easy ... more

Advantages Advantages some on demand content, can record two programmes at once

Disadvantages Disadvantages terrible, terrible usability issues when compared to sky

Having moved from Sky HD to the V+ service, which on paper actually looks better, I'd like to provide the following advice at the V+ box/ Virgin Media shortcomings. Annoyingly, most of these issues could all be fixed if someone could be bothered to issue a decent software update. I have the newer Samsung box, but the older Atlantic Scientific box has the same shortcomings, and is much, much slower and uglier. Most of the problems I list out below are concerned with the fact that the live TV and recording systems seem to be on a totally different ‘wavelength’– rather than working in perfect ... more

Advantages Advantages Record two channels while watching another. Pause and rewind live tv

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can become slow when harddrive fills up

Ive currently got 2 V+ units (One in each reception room) as they are such great machines! The default settings on the V+ are some of the simplest that I have come across and my personal opinion is that they are also easier to use compared to the Sky+ box which I previously had. For those of you who already have a virgin media box, upgrading to V+ is a must. Do not pay the thirty five pounds installation fee. Simply order the box and install yourself by swapping wire for wire and you are virtually up and running. You then need to place the old virgin card into the V+ box and then ring up ... more
