When VF5 first came out as a PlayStation 3 exclusive, to say I was gutted would be as much as an understatement as saying that the sun is a bit hot. But now, with the 360 version in hand, the tables have turned and I have no reservations and waving this new version in the faces of all those PS3 owners that have been rubbing this glorious fighting game in our faces for so long. With newly added online play and all the updates from the Version C arcade machine, this is by far the definitive version of the world's best beat-'em-up and after a period of some uncertainty, Sega is now very much back on top.
With its simple three button set-up, VF is, in theory, amongst the most basic fighting games you'll ever play. But rather than relying on complex canned combos and overly elaborate chains, AM2 simply offers you the tools with which to express yourself through violence. Each character sports a variety of situational moves with different properties allowing you to capitalise on any opening in a foes defence with a suitable attack and often follow it up for more damage. Putting together any kind of decent string will require practice, timing and accuracy and even the simplest characters take some serious learning if you want to do anything more than just the basics with them.
And it's thanks to this side of the game that VF5 is able to blossom into such an incredibly organic and personal fighting experience. Even with their designated move sets, no two players are likely to play the same character alike- one Jeffry may constantly look to set up his big damage throws, another play of heavy juggle combos from risky launcher attacks while another might rely heavily on stances to rack up wins. This freedom is what makes VF5 such an incredible game to play and even watch when two high level fighters are going at it, but at the same time this is what makes the game such a degree of success, you'll need to learn at least the main attacks of each of the fighters and learn how best to counter them with your chosen brawler. Some allow a free counter attack when blocked, others can be deftly sidestepped while more still can be interrupted simply by ducking under or jumping over blows and launching into your own barrage. There really isn't another fighting game like this. Well, besides the older VG games but that's pretty much a given.
So what exactly does Version C mean to you? One of the main changes is increased character balancing based on how arcade players had learned to exploit overpowered moves in the original coin-op version. This makes for a much fairer fight whoever you pick but the shiny new stuff doens't stop there. Another key element of the VF experience is dressing up your character with all kinds of crazy accessories and costume items that show your rivals how much time you've spent pummelling lesser fighters. With Version C comes a huge amount of new items for just this purpose and while some are available from the off, others must be unlocked at higher ranks and through beating certain opponents in Item Battles. Some of these items - both old and new - can drastically change the appearance of your character so you'll want to spend the time earning 'Fight Money' in each of the arcades so that you can fully pimp you combatant to look so as disgustingly amazing or as amazingly disgusting as you see fit.
With its varied and generally robust AI, VF5 offers gamers of all levels an excellent challenge on their own but it's wth two controllers connected that it really shines. Match series have often been known to go on way past everyone's bedtime and while many fighting games will see you changing characters every few minutes so as not to get bored, there are enough unique moments and opportunities on display here to make even the same two guys slugging it out a very real all-nighter proposal. Throw in the fact that it looks really lovely and will never cease to offer entertainment (learning even one character properly can take months, putting the entire cast at several years, so this sheer dedication and commitment to the VF cause won't please everyone), anybody with a fondness for violence or competitive play and a little patience would do very well to add Virtua Fighter 5 to their collection.

...out on the Xbox. Virtua Fighter was made by a man called Yu Suzuki who created many other great games, but this was different, the reason the Virtua Fighter series was a breakthrough for Sega-AM2 was because it was unlike any other fighting game the world had ever seen. It was iconic, unique in the sense that the fighting system (which has only appeared in the Virtua Fighter Series), was so realistic compared to Street Fighter and Tekken, each original ... ...you could take to supreme virtua fighter players who could use the exact same character and it could look entirely different for instance someone using Akira might use fast punch combos mixed with the odd elbow or kick now and again yet you get someone else who could use Akira and could be mixing powerful kicks followed by perhaps a throw. Also it is important to note that it is best to choose a favourite character and learn some of the endless combo's ...
