When we were looking round for a scanner to go with our new PC, we came across quite a few, but ended up with the Visioneer OneTouch 7600 USB. It is excellent.

It comes with a hugh instruction manual, which I thought I would never get through, but upon closer inspection realised that it is written in 5 different languages, so you only need 1/5th of the book.

We got it home, unpacked it and started with the set up. It couldn't have been easier. There are only two holes on the back, the power supply and the USB port. You can't get them wrong!! (Even I couldn't get them wrong!!!!!)

The book couldn't be clearer. From what is in the package, including what is in the parallel version) it goes on to explain the buttons on the scanner. It then goes on to how to install the PaperPort software that is supplied with it. Throughout the book there are illustrations of exactly what you should see on the screen, so you know if something has gone wrong.

The book then goes on to tell you how to use the different buttons on the scanner, but by this time I had stopped reading the manual because the labels on the buttons really speak for themselves. EXIT-Turn "OFF", CUSTOM-Basically is Auto OCR (Optical Character Recognition) and converts any text scanned into a wordprocessing document in Windows Note Pad, FAX-Sends the item you have scanned to your Fax Software (If you do not have fax software then you are reminded to configure the button to what you want) COPY/PRINT - Sends the document straight to your printer, great if you need a copy of an item but don't want it on your computer, although you can set it to save a copy as well. SCAN - Speaks for itself, it scans the item into PaperPort, from there you can Click & Drag to send the item to any of a number of different applications on your PC.

All the buttons (except the stop/cancel button) can be configured to your own requirements, and the manual tells you how to do this, though I find that the buttons as they are preset are fine for my requirements.

With the package we also got some "FREE" Software - MGI Photosuite - which I love and managed to make a wedding album for a friend from normal snapshots when the "Photographer" had problems with his camera. (My friend's father was the "Photographer").

There were some other packages in the box, but we haven't used them so I can't comment on them. They were Pagis Pro and Power Goo. I might get round to using them at somepoint. If I do I'll review them.

All in for approx £60 we got a pretty good scanner which does all we want an probably a whole lot more.

*******UPDATE*******

Despite not being "XP Compatible", there is an update on the Visioneer site which although not guaranteed to work, has meant that we can still use it and haven't had to buy a new Scanner.
