Advantages Advantages Good for if you use your phone lots

Disadvantages Disadvantages Made a bit redundant by text packs

Vodafone Smartstep is one of two Pay as You Go price plans available to Vodafone users. The main costs of interest are: Calls to land-line/other Vodafone - 30p per min for the first 3 mins each day; 5p per min after that. Calls to other mobile networks - 35p per min Text messages (SMS) - 12p for the first 3 texts each day; 9p after that. This was the price plan that I was on initially, and it seems very good if you make a lot, or long phone calls, and/or if you send a lot of text messages. HOWEVER, I then discovered text packs. These are add-ons that you can but for Pay as You Go phones. A £5 ... more

Advantages Advantages Good value if you make lots of outgoing calls / SMS Messages, good network reception

Disadvantages Disadvantages expensive international calls, They sponsor Manchester United + Ferrari F1 team

I've been on VODAFONE's Smartstep package for as long as I've owned a mobile phone. My Trium Mars (see seperate review) was part of a pay-as-you go package on Smartstep, back then (about Winter 2000) the deal was they charged you at Peak rate prices for the first 3minutes of calls everyday, then it was charged at off peak after that. Now it's pretty much the same deal + you also get charged full whack for your first 3 outgoing SMS messages of the day, then charged at a lower rate after that....... credit is charged in increments of £5, £10, etc via a swipe card thingy and is carried over at ... more

Advantages Advantages Great Reception Staff that want to help with your problems

Disadvantages Disadvantages I dont know how the costs compare

I have been with Vodafone now for 2 years, before that I was with Orange for 6 months, and Vodafone for a year before that. The reason I switched networks was because i was given the Orange sim card by my uncle along with a new phone. My experiance with Vodafone has been great, I have been able to recieve messages and calls at the top of a mountain, in Betws y Cohed (i think that is how to spell it) None of my friends had any signal at the top or bottom of the mountain. This could have been affected by the phone reception. when i was with Orange I had trouble with the sim card and had to phone ... more

    Advantages Advantages Text Packs

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Call costs

After many years as an orange customer i switched to Vodafone, not for any reason other than it was the network which my new phone was on. I found it quite expensive to text and call at first, with texts costing 12p each for the first 3 in any one day and then 9p each after the first 3 in that same day. But once i found they had introduced the '30 day packs' my texts became a bargain. For only £10 i could have 12 texts per day, thats a total of 360 texts for £10! if you dont use that many texts you can buy a £5 text pack which gives you 4 texts per day for 30 days. The call charges, I found ... more

Advantages Advantages The call charges are 5p after 3 minutes, texts 9p after 3 SMS

Disadvantages Disadvantages You have to make 3 minutes of calls for the 5p rate, 3 SMS for the 9p rate.

I have been on Smartstep since 2002. From my point of view, the charges for texts and calls are reasonable, although I am a little put off by the fact that you have to send 3 texts at 12p each, to get to the 9p rate and you also have to make 3 minutes of calls at 25p, to get to the 5p rate. But in my opinion, Smartstep is still a good rate and does charge you less than other networks. I think that it will appeal to those who make a lot of calls and send a lot of texts. The pricing structure is certainly easier to understand than other networks. And you are able to keep track of how many ... more
