Vodafone are one of the UK's mobile phone service providers. They made their first call at a few minutes past midnight on 1st January 1985 and by 1990 they had over 500,000 customers and by December 1993 they'd connected their one millionth customer and they are based out of offices in Newbury, Berkshire.

I've been with Vodafone for about 5 years or so always on PAYG. They have two tariffs for PAYG customers, Smartplus and Smartstep, a little about each tariff is shown below:

With any new Vodafone phone you'll automatically be on this tariff, but you can change to Smartstep by calling 2345 from your mobile phone:

SMARTPLUS

Calls to standard UK landlines and Vodafone mobiles
30p per minute daytime
5p per minute evening and weekend
(Daytime is 7:30am to 7:30pm)
calls to other networks 35p per minute
texts
12p per text

SMARTSTEP

Calls to standard UK landlines and Vodafone mobiles
30p per minute for first 3 minutes each day
5p per minute after that
calls to other networks
35p per minute
texts
12p per text for the first 3 texts each day
9p per text after that
(Vodafone Stop The Clock is not available on this plan)

You can add Vodafone Stop The Clock for free but only to the Smartplus tariff.

Vodafone Stop the Clock is a new service to PAYG customers where you can talk for 60 mins but only pay for 3 mins.

You can also add "packs" to your PAYG account, which consist of :

£5 text pack - 70 texts (to be used over 30 days)
£10 text pack - 200 texts (again to be used over 30 days)
£15 text pack - 500 texts (to be used over a 30 day period)
£20 text pack - 675 texts (30 day validity period)
£15 voice pack - 100 anytime minutes (used over a 30 day period to any UK landline or mobile but only for use with the Smartplus tariff)
£25 voice pack - 200 anytime minutes (again to be used over a 30 day period to any UK landline or mobile but only for use on the Smartplus tariff)

Its simple to get these "packs" you just call 2345 from your mobile phone or send a text and the price of the pack will come off your credit.

Vodafone also have an exclusive "free" wap based site that you can view (as long as you have at least 33p credit) from your phone. Most Vodafone phones are customised with the "live!" logo on the front screen of the phone for ease of use. Here you will find many exciting things, download ringtones, games, read the news, look up the weather forecast etc. With the new 3G phones you also have the option to have Sky TV for free for 3 months.

Vodafone also have a dedicated website, www.vodafone.co.uk, where you will find a host of other things that Vodafone offers. In addition all Vodafone customers have the option to set up their own Vodafone email account, www.vodafone.net, which you can also access via your phone.

On Vodafone's website they have an online shop where you can purchase phones from as well as refurbished phones at great prices.

Some useful numbers for Vodafone users are:
  • #1345# = balance enquiry
  • #100# = own number
2345 = Vodafone customer services (automated, unless you get connected to a Customer Services advisor then its a flat rate of 25p)
    1211 = call divert

I have a Sharp GX17 on Vodafone which I bought for £60 in the Vodafone shop. I normally put only £5 credit on it which lasts quite a while. I've been with other service providers and have found that Vodafone is one of the best with best coverage of the UK and best reception.

Most Vodafone phones retail from £30 to £250 to the newer ones. All retail shops have friendly, helpful staff who are more than willing to help you choose the right phone.

Good review. I am on Vodafone, as we had terrible problems with O2 customer service and could not get a signal on Orange when we moved house!
