Great drive
Advantages: Lovely, Quiet drive, comfortable and good mod-cons Disadvantages: Not that 'exciting'... if thats your thing!
I love this car, although I'm not sure it gives me the same 'buzz' as my first ever golf in 1992!
Having owned it now for approx 3 months... and with 4500 miles on the clock, it has been a super addition to the family.
With a reasonable punch under the bonnet, and an excellent MPG - its doing nearly 60 to the gallon... it is both comfortable and easy to drive.
The cruise control is easy to use, although the standard 'gadgets' are satisfactory ... ...weekend, and had plenty of room in the boot for tent, sleeping bags, and accessories for me, the wife and two (small) children.
With a range of nearly 650 miles when filled, and a full tank costing £ 50/£55... it is also benefitting the family budget.
Good car... just a little bit less excting than the older model?! ...

vw golf 1.6 fsi
Advantages: economical on short and distance journey. Disadvantages: slow pick up
i have a golf 1.6 fsi myself and i really like it. beside doing the best for the environment and saving money, the 1.6 liter is a bit slow on pick up and lags what the r32 or gt or gti would have, sporty looks powerful engine and better luxuries, i.e upgraded stereo better seats alloy wheels etc.
the only fault i have had with my golf is the COIL PACK which is a common fault on mk5 golfs which cost about £40 to £60.
every 2 yr service cost about ...

Average Golf
Advantages: More space than standard car, excellent fuel efficiency, safety Disadvantages: frumpy to look at, quality has deteriorated,
...really drives like any other Volkswagen basically meaning you won't have a barrel of laughs but it will go about its business in an assured way. The engine is powerful enough for the weight of the car. A particularly commendable feature of the car is that on a long run, it will actually return 55mpg.
Looks
Personally I think the smaller standard Golf is better aesthetically and this variant could even be described as frumpy.

VW Golf Dec 2001 SE TDI (90bhp) 5dr
Advantages: solid, reliable, economical and safe Disadvantages: the handbrake design
This was my first ever VW I bought this via an action when it was 18 months (June 2003), the car had 24,000 miles and FSH. It was around 16k new I paid around 10k for it, thought that was a good deal. Drivability is very smooth and comfortable compared to my last car, Peugeot 106. Just was I need as I drive over 500 miles a week. Fuel economy is great, I average around 60mpg if I am very sensible around 68mpg. It is still nippy enough with the ninety ... ...reasonable enough and the tax is £120 per year Safety is well thought out with front airbags, side airbags and side impact bars the car has 4 encap safety stars. The all disk breaking and abs means you can get it stop pretty quickly when needed. It also has a very low sump to it sticks to the round on the corners, although you have to be carefully with bumps and kerbs. Service wise, I have no major problems as I fully serviced air oil and fuel religiously ...

don't buy one
Advantages: none Disadvantages: arrogant customer service
After owning VW golfs for over 25 years I’ve always found them reliable easy to maintain and a pleasure to drive well I’ll never buy another one and advise people to read below before purchasing one.
Two weeks ago I had trouble starting my VW 04 1.4FSI golf MK 5 , so I phoned the vw dealers and got it towed to their workshop to diagnose the fault, they told me they were not sure but they thought the cambelt had slipped and would need 6 hours investigation ... ...ahead but said I was surprised because the service book says the cambelt did not need to be checked till 60000 miles and my car had only done 35000 miles.
Anyway they checked and informed me that the cambelt had faulted and done considerable damage £1705.65 to be exact. I told them to fix it as I did not have much option, I asked if it was a common occurance on this model they told me that they had seen it happen but not on a car with such low mileage.
