Extremely over rated box on wheels! Advantages: Performance & MPG Disadvantages: Bloody everything else! Well this is the story of my time with my Golf. What can I say, I had 2 previous Rovers beforehand and both had been pretty good reliable cars. However I was on the market for something diesel and my friend had recently bought a diesel golf and it seemed very quick and offered good mpg that I thought I should consider a golf as my next car. I paid £2540 Features The features within the Golf were very good. It had electric sunroof, electric windows all round, electric mirrors, remote locking etc. It also had lights everywhere. Insurance I found it really easy to insure and it actually worked out slightly cheaper than my previous Rover 216 Coupe SE. Drive The body roll is horrendous. all things that GTi means Advantages: brilliant little turbo charged pocket rocket, great value for money Disadvantages: none!! I bought this car after saving up and planning to buy its TDI brother, but when this one turned up, it was far to good to pass up at £3600 with 91000miles, full history, recaro cloth seats, climate, electric sunroof. it wasnt what I expected to buy, having set my mind on a a4 tdi. But having owned it for 6 months, covered 6000miles, its never let me down, everything still works, it still looks cool and modern no matter where it is and it is very ... ...trying hard either. There are some bits that are expensive like the 16" tyres which cost me £80 each for michelin. Oil it uses isnt cheap either £36 for 5litres. VW Golf 1.6 SE Advantages: roomy, handles well, well built Disadvantages: brake calipers Does everything well and has provied a good buy. Reliable and requires minimum maintenance. A CD player from standard would have been a good improvement. Can handles well and the 1.6 engine offers enough. Haven't managed a MPG yet but it seems fair. You can feel the build quality and as a result it can be chucked about and not sustain too much damage. Car is now 8 and for its last MoT it required a headlight adjustment! Golf has aged and has gone senile Advantages: Residual market value Disadvantages: Expensive - has become too clever for itself I have a 2007 MK5.5 golf hatch 1.9TDi - all I can say is that it is appalling compared with a MK4 golf I have (MK5.5 due to the new type engine with 132g/km CO2 emission). First a simple stupid design: fitting a chrome rim to a coin tray on the dashboard! It causes reflection in windscreen and distracts driver - a safety hazard. The fuel economy of the 1.9TDi engine has worsened a lot. With my MK4 Golf, I get 52mpg the usual way I drive. With the ...
