I have justt bought a used golf for 10k from vw grimsby. I have driven it for the last 2 weeks and noticed grinding noises coming from the brakes so i checked the discs and couldnt believe what i saw... All 4 discs have a good step on the inside and outer edges and the rear discs are heavily corroded. I contacted Vw and asked about thier used car pre sale inspection checks and they said, and i quote We knew the discs were bad but we thought they were safe enough to last untill the next service was due (10000 miles) so i guess this means they are willing to sell defective cars because in 10000 miles they can bill me for 4 new discs and pads which have been defective since day one and make a bit more money out of me. So here is what was offered. The service manager promised me a phonecall on saturday from thier FINANCE manager to discuss possible arrangements to resolve this matter. Guess what... no phone call. So i cal them again and speak to the seervice manager again who offers to clean the discs for me but the finance manager is not prepared to rectify the problem, So a company as large as VW are willingly selling defective cars on the basis that they will make another big score later on from work they failed to carry out IN THE FIRST PLACE. I feel they are misrepresenting the volkswagen group as a whole by telling me the old story that ^all our used cars have a thourough inspection against any defects before being sold^..... yes they inspect, but only to see how much money they can make out of you at the first service. I also have a transporter VW van. My discs on the van were replaced earlier in the year by the same garage who told me they definately need replacing, i paid over 300 for new discs and pads to be fitted and those discs looked brand new compared to the ones on my Golf. So in thier own eyes, they are admitting they need replacing, but they are saying I have to Pay?? I dont think so
Luckily i found this problem before my 1 month no quibble warranty is up, they are due to call me on monday to discuss further after i told them to either replace the discs and pads or they can have the car back.My advise....
Dont use this garage, they are sneaky, dishonest, and plain crooks,
i will post a further report after i speak to them on monday

Sometimes discs have a 'step' on them without being defective provided there is no corrosion on the friction surfaces & the pads & calipers are in good working condition. They can last many miles in this condition. Great review
