Having travelled lots of miles in lots of different cars, the 340 still is the most comfy (forget all the BMW's and big executive cars) and when you get five guys the fat gits that are my friends, it's still big enough and has the guts in the engine to keep going. I was shocked to find that is also more fuel efficient than my old proton, despite having a significantly bigger engine. And my last one got to 155000 miles before the problems started....looks like another 100K with this one then...
Advantages: Strong, safe, reliable. Disadvantages: Ugly shape unless you have a spoiler !
I think the fact that there are so many of these cars still on the road speaks volumes for itself. How many cars do you see with 100,000 + on the clock and still going, well mine is.
My silver bullet as i call her is the 340 GLE 1.7 hatchback model, she has 148,000 on the clock, was registered in 1989 (F REG ),and has a go-faster spoiler on the back, she is very economical to run and has never let me down yet.
Ive had her now for 17 months and ... ...steering rack. Her engine retains all the original parts and her ex-owner wishes hed never parted with her. Ive had a CD system fitted and some groovy loud speakers so that i can blast the ultra modern cars out ! She is a very fast car, ive often cruised down the motorway, looked down at the speedo and realised that im way over the speed limit. Her heaters kick out good heat and the cooling fan works really well, included in my model is air-conditioning...the ...

...the end of June, a Volvo 340 DL - £80, yes £80!!!
As public transport is possibly the most inconvenient way to travel I parted with the cash. Walked over to see a faded blue “D” reg 1.4 340. My first thought was WHAT HAVE I DONE!!!!! After thinking about the marvellous walk to and fronm the bus station, the wonderful bus I have to catch I decided to give the little bugger a trial.
I got in and closed the door, a solid clunk as it shut. ... ...To my amazement it started with out even seeming to think about it! 136,000 mile were on the clock and this thing started quicker than some much newer cars I have driven. The clutch was light and I had no problems finding the biting point. Into first gear and off we went.
Performance of this little character can not and never will be described as sprightly. 0-60 seemed to take days rather than seconds, but it was designed for a purpose. To get from ...

Advantages: Cheap car to buy these days Book price less than £1500 Disadvantages: may need new carbouretta or other improvements to make it run
...years ago I bought a Volvo 345 DL a 1.7 Litre hatchback, It needed new suspension bushes anew clutch and a new Carbouretta to get it running right but once it was running I could bet 36 mpg out of it (6 or 7 Miles per litre) thats pretty good or a 13 year old car. The style of car i bought was the plastic seat and no frills type and so I cannot comment on these but with a conventional heater system I was perfectly alright. Driving the car was great ... ...it would overtake great and for a small style of car it was not to small car(and I'm a six footer) but driving it in small areas was great. The interior was as mentioned not special but it was big enough to do a lot I moved a large house contents into a small bungalow in a short number of trips and did a grass cutting job without banging my head on the equipment every time I moved my head.
Now the bad news I was driving my car in the snow and ice ...

Volvo 340 DL 1.4 Hatchback
The classic Volvo design, chunky but functional.
The seating is comfortable and supportive whilst the driving position is excellent. All round visibility is quite good although the front headrests tend to get in the way when reversing. Steering is positive but not too sensitive which makes for more relaxed driving especially on long journeys.
Mine is a 1988 model with over 100,000 miles on the clock and the engine seems ...

Advantages: Tank like Disadvantages: Some spares can be expensive, ugly
...It was the chunky tank-like Volvo three forty.
I looked down at the price to see if I could afford it,
It was only £100 quid so I went right out and brought it.
The ride was smooth,
The seats were comfy,
It felt indestructible.
I filled her up,
Off I went,
I could have drove to Dunstable
Then one tragic day,
6 months down the line,
She took a turn for the worst,
The day before she was fine.
I found out it was the alternator,
I’d have ... ...Pages,
Then found a dealer and rung.
The alternator cost £60 quid,
More than half the price of the car,
But I had to buy it for her,
She had taken me so far.
Half a mile down the road,
She now spends her days on a scrap heap.
You see the problem with old Betsy,
Is that the spares were the opposite of cheap. ( I apologise for the bad poetry but I felt like doing something different). ...

Advantages: You are treated like a woman and not a dumb blond. Disadvantages: The price of the new cars
I was helping a friend last week to buy a car. She had a limited budget and needed a safe car that would not prove to be a white elephant! My husband came with us but stayed in the background. What he likes is for me to check the car over and watching the face of the salesman as I find the faults, about the cars history, bounce the supension and even go underneath the car to check for damage. You see, I am was taught at the age of sixteen to rebuild a V4 engine under the guidence of my husband (an engineer) and my father in law (a car mechanic). I have some working knowledge about car mechanics!
Back to the Proton Garage. We popped into this new dealership in Cambridgeshire. Straight away I was on the lookout for my brief and I seemed to find it in a Secondhand Volvo340 1.7, in the lot. The salesman and owner of the franchise did not ...

Advantages: Drives well, looks nice. Disadvantages: None so far
This is my fourth car, previous cars being Sierra,Carlton and a Volvo340. I bought it used from a dealer (M reg) with 45,000 miles on the clock for £4,000.Apart from one small fault (There is a slight rattling noise from the timing belt cover when the engine revs hit 3000 & Ford cannot seem to cure it !)it has been totaly reliable now for 10 months. It drives and handles well, looks nice and one useful feature is the adjustable steering wheel.
Overall, I would say this is one of, if not the best cars Ford have bought out. ...

Advantages: VW Engine, excellent features Disadvantages: No key lock on boot
When my last Volvo340 started to become a bit unreliable in the winter of 1993, I decided that I needed a new car. There was no hesitation, I wanted another Volvo340 and managed to find an H-Reg that was in good condition and I bought that. All in all, my 2 little Volvo340?s have taken me through 18 years of driving.
At the end of June I was told that my H-Reg Volvo would fail its MOT, it needed around £500 work for it to pass. So I had to make a decision. Pay the money and keep the car for another year (otherwise I wouldn?t get the benefit of the work done), or just let it go and go and buy a new car. After a few tears I decided on the latter. I had already started to look at other cars and try to work out what my next car would be, but I just hadn?t expected to backed into a corner like this quite so soon. I had wanted to ...
