A 19yr old in a Volvo?? Thats what they all said when I brought my Volvo 440 Xi. I think that getting the volvo was a good move because of the reliabilty and the low insurance group. Before I got the car I had a Vauxhall Cavalier 1.4L and then the when I got the 440 I found out that the 1.8 injection engine was only one group higher. Im paying around £600 for thrid party fire and theft but thats with 2 years no claims. I think that the group for my model is 7.
Being only 19 I got my fair share of abuse from friends who repeatly told me that "A Volvo is an old mans car", but I myself am happy with the car. Admittly although it is an L-reg (1993) the interior does seem out-dated compared to the likes of fords and vauxhalls of the same age but the 1994 model had a new image with new interior, different headlights and colour coded bumpers.
The cars performance cannot be put down. If the foot is put down in second gear you can feel the pull of the car which offers no resistance. I recently changed the front brake discs and pads which has made the breaking superb.
The car may not look stylish but I recently got a set of Volvo alloys on it which does make it look a bit different. These came cheap second hand and other parts eg brakes and belts are cheap from places like halfords. If you go to Volvo they tend to charge you alot.
The sercuity is not brilliant but I fitted an imobilser under the steering column which will avoid start-up by thieves.
Overall I would reccommend the car to young and old as the Volvo has been labeled the old man's car for years.

I have owned 6 Volvos (two of which have been 440s) and I love them. I have always loved Volvos and had one when I was 18 ! I wanted one even when i was really young ! I currently drive a Jeep Cherokee, but it was going for a song so I could not resist, but I would happily go back to Volvos for their cast iron reliability and safety, Happy motoring.

You lot (biff, elsley, bournie, Candyarroll) are the reason why Durex were invented. Waste of a good sperm and egg. P.S. Bournie is no longer a member....Hope you follow the trend.
