Better than you think
Advantages: General loveliness. Disadvantages: Fiddley to replace headlamp bulbs.
...the world.
Exterior is typical volvo quality somehow manages to look a cut above mid-range cars.
The 2.4 D5 diesel engine is an absolute gem (at least so far). Nice sound to it ;hard to believe it's a diesel. It's truly punchy and can surprise you with its acceleration and eats up motorway miles easily. (0-60 approx 8.0secs. Top speed 143mph)
The best thing for me is the fuel consumption I regularly get 41 - 43 in general driving. But most remarkably ... ...of 330 miles I got 62mpg!!!
Admittedly there were no hold ups at all on the journey and I drove carefully but not too slowly. I filled up before I left and drove 660 miles in total there and back and still had a weeks worth of petrol for gadding about on. At the start of the journey I had to drive many miles in a 50mph zone and reached 67.5 mpg. If I'd carried on all the way at that speed i felt sure I could have achieved 70mpg.
The disadvantages ...

A GREAT CAR FOR ALL SEASONS AND TASTES.
Advantages: Superb Engine. Great Looks. Sybaritic Scandanavian Interior. Disadvantages: High List Price. Depreciation. Small Boot Opening.
WHAT IS IT?
The Volvo S60 is Volvo's first truly modern, non-brick shape design. OK, I know that a couple of you will argue that the S80 came first by a short head, but nobody could really offer that up as a style icon. Ironically, the new S80 just launched by Volvo looks far sleeker and more S60 like - rumours are that the S60 will actually be killed off.
Since the launch of the S60, Ford have taken a majority shareholding in Volvo. Ironically, ... ...far better, and less expensive, Volvo S60 available in the form of the D5 - the five cylinder 163bhp diesel powered version.
Confusingly, since writing that review, that model - the one that I am specifically reviewing here, has been renamed - it is now the 2.4D, the D5 badge being transferred to the latest, more powerful 185bhp diesel. Both diesel models now have the benefit of a six speed gearbox. The original D5 as reviewed here, was specified ...

Volvo s60 T5 SE
Advantages: Very fast, luxrious, vast space, extremely reliable. Disadvantages: Can wear tyres if driven hard often.
...second to non. My second Volvo now and its fantastic. The spec inside is incredible, full leather, electronic memory movement and heated seats, dual climate control front and rear, cruise control, 4 disc Cd changer with steering mounted control, electronic trip and information center displays every little bit of info you require about your journey, from boot not closed to front headlamp failure or seatbelts not on. the list goes on and on. Performance ... ...can think of due to a 0-62mph time of 6.1 seconds, all in a car with beautifully understated sleek line, and on to a restricted speed of 155mph. More incredibly with those figures you can easily return 35mpg on a long motorway jouney, in the pleasure of a luxurious and very quiet cabin. ...

Fabulous all round car
Advantages: Punchy, characterful engine, refinement, comfort, build quality, equipment, value for money Disadvantages: Poor turning circle, poor rear legroom, numb steering
...this is a Volvo, and Volvo build quality is legendary with tales of 350,000 mile cars still running fine, and the Volvo owners club having several 500,000 milers still registered as running. Whilst I can't vouch for that, I can say that the S60 shrugs off 120,000 miles like most cars shrug off half that. I have never driven a car with mileage like this that feels so new. The doors still close with a well damped clunk, absolutely everything works, ... ...HPI clear car, with full Volvo service history, and in immaculate condition apart from a small parking dent in one door.
Lacks the dynamic talent of a BMW, but is comfortably a match for an Audi A4, matches both for quality of finish and durability, and beats them both for performance and comfort (model for model), and all for a fraction of the cost. Oh, and a rarer sight on the roads too.
Very highly recommended. ...

Under-rated, excellent value - and over here !
Advantages: smooth quiet solid reliable comfortable swift user-friendly Disadvantages: poor turning circle "image"of Volvo
Forget Beemers, Audidoodies and the Mercroundthe Benz's this car is so preferable to it's counterpart in those competing ranges. The S60 is one of those motoring secrets. I happened upon it by accident, went for a test drive when i had nothing better to do and was instantly sold. It's a fabulous ride and I also enjoy driving with a bit of brio - it will let me do that to my satisfaction too.
This is such and under-rated car - but not by me. I have ... ...missed a beat. Perhaps that is not uncommon in a modern car but the experience has not been tiring even. After 700 miles + in a day across the continent I felt no need to stagger out of the car and into bed. Quiet, smooth, effortless.
Buy one now !!!! ...
