...for the insurance. With options abound it pays to be picky when buying, as the options lists go on and on. Replacing parts can be expensive at maindealers.
i still own the volvo and am not looking to change it just yet and would definantly consider another Volvo again. ...

Reliable family workhorse
Advantages: Extremely fuel efficient, safe and fast Disadvantages: lack of room in the rear, not a lot of storage space in the front
I have had this car for just over a year now, I bought it second hand with over 20,000 miles on the clock, 2 years old, the person who had it previous to me had put in leather seats and parking sensors, so I got a bit more than the basic model. I have had many estate cars in the past, mostly BMW's, a RAV 4 and a vauxhall, I have never owned a diesel before this, and I must say, the fuel economy is fantastic compared to my previous cars, 40-45 mpg! ... ...spongy either, the cockpit is just right for me at 5ft 7in, but my OH at 6ft 2in finds it cramped. I imagined a diesel to be a bit slow on acceleration, but not this one, it has no problem accelerating from any speed. It has never let me down, starts every time, even when left outside all night in the snow.I recently had to purchase two new tyres for the front and they were much cheaper than the BMW ones, services are reasonable too.
The only two ...

Volvo V40 1.6
Advantages: Spacious, Volvo Safety, Road Holding, Reliability Disadvantages: Underpowered, Comfort, MPG
...starting with a lovely, quick Volvo 360 GLT, through the 4 series, S40, etc
I bought this V40 1.6 about 12 months ago as I 'needed' a car to get my dog around in after trading my Isuzu Trooper for a Mazda RX8. I didnt want to spend too much on a second car having just splashed out on the Mazda with the 'must have' toys', much to my wifes disaproval. After several fruitless searches of local garages I bumped into an old school friend at the Volvo ... ...or at least thats what Volvo call it but it is metallic blue to me. All in all, a nice motor to look at.
So we come to the inside.
As this is the Volvo V40 1.6, it is the base model in the range and you get exactly that. There are no fancy gadgets, no toys too play with, put simply it is functional. It is fitted with the usual features such as electric windows and mirrors, air con (pretty much standard nowadays), single CD player, tape deck (does ...

V40 T4
Advantages: spacious estate with plenty under the bonnet. Disadvantages: not the most economical engine for a pratical car
...economy is not the best at around 30 miles to the gallon combined. I have owned one for 3 years, other than service work no problems. Quality Volvo build!
If buying used check car for condition on paint work and interior as some can be neglected. ...

Quality and performance at a bargain price
Advantages: Power, build quality, comfort, equipment, maintenance costs Disadvantages: Image, fuel economy
...was pleasantly surprised by the Volvo after the BMW - the performance in higher gears was actually superior, though over the 0-60 sprint a bit slower. Also, you can't chuck it around country roads as much, but ithe handling is reasonable for a family estate car. It is most at home on motorways - the handling is solid, precise and refined. The power really gets going above 4000 rpm, and it is easy to overtake with no effort whatsover. In fact, it ... ...average. Whilst most people see Volvo as a quality brand, it is also seen as a bit of an old mans car. The XC90 and S60 are however doing wonders to change this image, long may it continue. The build quality is better than the BMW that I had. There is a solid feel to the car, and the refinement is unbeliveable. It is hard to hear the engine, and the suspension soaks up all but the worst potholes. I would highly recommend this car, it has served the ...
