As a current owner of a 1.6 S40, I would like to share with you the joys of this car. The car is super safe, after all Volvo does mean "Rolling Iron", so you can expect all the safety features your dear old Granddad expected from his first Volvo.
It all depends on what you are looking to get from your vehicle. If you are looking for complete peace of mind, knowing that should the worst come to the worst, you will be safe, then this is your car. If you are looking for a car that has stunning looks and decent performance, this is your car.
Ok, so fuel consumption is not the best with this car, but that is to be expected. It is a 1.6, so it won't have the same MPG as your 1.0 run-around. It is also quite a heavy car, another sign of its immense safety. Take the versions with a few extras and this car soon becomes just as luxurious as the next.
The half leather seats and burl wood dash go a treat. The air-conditioning is a great extra to have, along with the Air Mix, Air Circulation, Electric Windows and Mirrors. It has all the basic extras you would expect, and so it should.
The 1998 version of the 1.6 S40 is up there in the same league as the BMW 3 Series, so you know that it is going to be a good drive before you even start.
The steering is very light in the S40, something which I personally love. The ride is smooth, as the seats are extremely comfortable, along with the well set-up suspension.
With the 1.6 you are looking to get the following specs out of it.
BHP - 105 (Approx.) Top Speed - 115MPH (Approx.) 0 - 60 Time - 9.6secs (Approx.)
At the end of the day, this car isn't going to get you too far in the world of Street Racing, but when you drive a car as beautiful, and as comfortable as this, who cares.
Along with the decent engine specs, there are the obvious specs that we look at first. The interior and exterior looks. With alloy wheels and the OEM spoiler, the car automatically looks sportier.
Inside the car are all the mod cons. Drinks holders are located behind the hand bake in the MK1 models, and Volvo sell Drinks holders for the back too. The boot has some nice little extras such as belts for luggage, and netting to hold loose items in place.
The dash area is also well presented and set out nicely. There is a small light that stays on until you touch the break pedal, and then it goes out, but if it stays on you have a broken brake light. This is always a nice touch, as it means you have to spend less time checking the car for working lights, and more time driving. There is also a nice "Service" light that lets you know it is time for you to take your car for another check-up. The backlights can also be dimmed on the dash using a little dial, so no more sore eyes.
If you look on the dealer website you will see that you have the option to buy the “All New S40” or the “Classic S40”. Only the Classic S40 has the option of a 1.6i engine, and in my personal opinion looks much nicer than the All New S40.
Advantages: Compact Disadvantages: Restricted space inside
The S40 SE 1.6 is a well equiped car with everything you need including climate control, leather interior, air conditioning, SIP's, style and much more. The handling is good in the dry weather but a little less so in the snow. For a 1.6 the power to weight ratio is about right and the car is good to drive. The only down side is the lack of leg room for rear passengers who have limited forward view due to the front head restraints. The boot space ...

...was stiff after i asked Volvo to replace it. After much dispute the Sales manager advised that it is a design fault and no longer appears on newer versions of the S40. It is so stiff i could probably prise it open with a crow bar.
The ride of my S40 is smooth, a little under-powered for a 1.6 16 valve, but ideal for a small family.
The car does about 35.9 miles to the gallon which if driven properly will do 350-400 miles to the tank. The tank hold ...

...a full description of the Volvo S40 1.6. Because this is the car that I drive I can tell you everything. When I first got in I thought, what a comfortable car this is, I tuned the radio, put it up full blast and drove. The tank was full with petrol, I got as far as fleet and discovered that the petrol needed refilling. It had very effective power steering, brilliant air conditioning and a very effective CD player. The seats were very comfortable ... ...as usual Some typical Volvo faults though. Because the Volvo is a Swiss car every thing apart from the steering wheel and dashboard were the wrong side, the hand brake was closer to the passenger seat than the drivers seat. The mirror in the sun shield was above the driver and not the passenger, and of course there was the typical Volvo fault that the lights were constantly on. This did not really effect my Volvo driving experience though. When I ...

...new car. As bikers, a Volvo always used to be our nemesis, so when I got one, boy was I ribbed! In fact, when it arrived, one frined bought me some fluffy dice, and another bought me a tartan rug! Only the fact that no-one could find one did I not receive a crocheted facial tissue cover!
Oh how they laugh on the other sides of their faces now!

Reviews which might be of interest for "Volvo S40 1.6"
I like Volvos. I would hope so now that I have owned 6 of them starting with a lovely, quick Volvo 360 GLT, through the 4 series, S40, etc
I bought this V401.6 about 12 months ago as I 'needed' a car to get my dog around in after trading my Isuzu Trooper for a Mazda RX8. I didnt want to spend too much on a second car having just splashed out on the Mazda with the 'must have' toys', much to my wifes disaproval. After several fruitless searches of local garages I bumped into an old school friend at the Volvo dealership who introuduced me to this car which they had just taken in. It seemed to fit the bill nicely. It was an estate, ideal for the dog, and was in the price bracket I was looking at. After a test drive, the deal was done
So, enough waffling, what are my views of the car. Lets look first at the exterior
The car is ...
