The good old square box went round.

Advantages: none
Disadvantages: none

...ever want to annoy a volvo driver, flash him and then tell him his lights are on and its only 1:30 in the afternoon!!! Enought of that, on with the review!!!
Volvo's S40 and V40 models consigned angular 1970s styling to the past and ushered in curvaceous and stylish looks that harked back to cars like the P1800S, star of the 1960s TV series 'The Saint'.It was a box on wheels that made skodas lok like streamlined supercars.
They looked ...
...all-important first step on the Volvo ownership ladder at prices starting from £14,495 including standard air conditioning - £4,000 less than you'd pay for an entry-level BMW 3 Series saloon. Since launch, the range has been continuously improved and the latest substantial changes, dubbed 'Phase II' by Volvo, have taken three years of development work culminating in new engines and transmissions, retuned chassis, upgraded specifications and additional ... more

Ooh how grown up am I

Advantages: Very safe
Disadvantages: A bit too safe .......

...was told it was a Volvo S40, I said "what on earth do they look like?!!". I really had no idea about Volvo's and never had the slightest interest in them. The only thought I had had about them was the people that drive the big square estates seem to think they own the road!! Anyway when I saw what my new car looked like I was more than happy (it's silver which is my fave colour for cars as well). When I got into the car it just felt so comfortable. ...
...when I'm walking up to my car!! I really do love it and after never even thinking about owning a Volvo I would seriously contemplate another one! And the safety aspect of driving a Volvo with two small children plays a very large part in wanting to own another one. ...

Disadvantages: fuel economy not as good as could be

...looking around and saw a volvo driving past me and thought why not have a laugh and see how much they cost, to my surprise a second hand volvo is not that dear, checked the features and wow you get a lot for your money, you get the usual extras, like leccy windows central locking, air con, then theres the traction control, heated wing mirrors and the very nice heated seats. As yet the only problem i have had is that they cost a bit more to service ...

Womans Perspective on the Volvo S40 2.0 T

Advantages: Comfy car, economical on petrol, roomy,
Disadvantages: Insurance price

We purchased the Volvo S40 T in March of this year. Ours is a 1999 model. With low mileage for the year, and were pleasantly suprised how economical its turned out to be. This car has turned out to be a real bargain. Advantages: A filled tank lasts for ages.It has a 60 litre fuel tank and runs on petrol. The car is fitted with Central Locking, Alarm System, Immobilizer, ABS and Air conditioning as standard. The level of comfort is suprising especially on long journey's. Kids who can usually spew for england on long haul journey's seem unaffected in this beautiful car. There's plenty of leg room so not too much fighting. The boot space is huge. (can easily fit 3 BMX bikes in with front tyres dismantled). So stacks of room for the monthly shop or suitcases etc.The boot is equipped with Cargo nets with various anchorage points ...

New Volvo S40 2.0D SE

Advantages: Low Price for Premium Badge, Styling, Build Quality, Handling
Disadvantages: Lack of cubby space, Boot too shallow

, the front door pockets are very very small, I can just about fit in my PDA and that's it. The glovebox, though deep is yet again too small and the boot is shallow though quite deep. Summing up, the S40 2.0D SE is a super motor, handsome, excellent value for money and an inexpensive rival to other premium badges. ...

One for the Road

Advantages: Super 'real world' performance, Comfortable.
Disadvantages: How can I turn those lights off?

If you need to cover long distances quickly and in comfort then it would be hard to beat the S40 in 2.0t guise. My late 98 car has had a couple of glitches which were rectified under warranty. Noisy suspension bushes which were redesigned on the 99 model were replaced and Volvo recalled me to replace pipework to the oil cooler - something that only effects the turbo models. More surprisingly some 2.0t and more potent T4 also had ECU problems. In my case this manifested itself in a sudden surge of power at about 2,000 rpm and then the power levelled off quickly - sometimes embarassing me when overtaking. Volvo replaced the ECU and the difference was startling. I don't want to be negative about this car because it is very impressive. 160bhp and more importantly 169 lb ft of torque from only 1800rpm mean quick progress and easy ...
