The 2.4TD (diesel) engine is smooth, very quiet and never feels underpowered. The official performance figures are 0-60 mph in 9.5 secs and a top speed of 130 mph. But where the S60 diesel really stands out ... ...excellent option, although like most Volvo options it is not particularly cheap. The automatic gearbox is very smooth and you hardly notice the gear changes, making for a very relaxing drive, but if you do fancy a slightly more sporty drive, you can make use of the 'geartronic' feature. The 2.4TD (diesel) engine is smooth, very quiet and never feels underpowered. The official performance figures are 0-60 mph in 9.5 secs and a top speed of 130 mph. But where the S60 diesel really stands out is the fuel economy it achieves at the same time as such good performance - an average of 43.5 mpg.
We chose the automatic gearbox, which may vary these figures slightly. This is an excellent option, although like most Volvo options it is not particularly cheap. The automatic gearbox is very smooth and you hardly notice the gear changes, making for a very relaxing drive, but if you do fancy a slightly more sporty drive, you can make use of the 'geartronic' feature. This basically means, by slipping the gear lever to the left, you can change gear manually - push it forwards and it changes up a gear, or towards you to change down. This is a good feature if you like to have a bit more control over gear changes, and it allows you hold on to lower gears for brisk overtaking etc.
The handling is generally very good, although at slower speeds it gives you little feed back and as does not feel as sharp and precise as my Focus, but for motorway cruising or putting it through sweeping bends at high speeds, it feels excellent. The steering does suffer from an unnecessarily large turning circle, making manoeuvering in tight spaces a complicated business! My Dad has one other slight dislike of the car - he thinks the wing mirrors are too small and not that easy to see out of, but this doesn't bother me too much when the rest of the car is so good!
Whilst it doesn't shout about it's quality in the same way as a Mercedes or Audi, there is a distinct feeling of solidity and durability, with a sufficient element of style. We chose the SE model, which compared to a BMW 3 series, is very good value for money and well equiped. The specification includes 17" alloy wheels, leather seats, CD changer, air conditioning and all the other usual refinements you would expect to find in a quality car.
Overall there is nothing to fault about this car - it's quick, economical, smooth, and well built and designed. It's not an exciting car but it' won't let you down in any other respect.

Forget Beemers, Audidoodies and the Mercroundthe Benz's this car is so preferable to it's counterpart in those competing ranges. The S60 is one of those motoring secrets. I happened upon it by accident, went for a test drive when i had nothing better to do and was instantly sold. It's a fabulous ride and I also enjoy driving with a bit of brio - it will let me do that to my satisfaction too.
This is such and under-rated car - but not by me. I have ... ...missed a beat. Perhaps that is not uncommon in a modern car but the experience has not been tiring even. After 700 miles + in a day across the continent I felt no need to stagger out of the car and into bed. Quiet, smooth, effortless.

This is my second one of these beauties and i cant see myslef changing from them. Bulit to last and they are so smooth. Havnt really got anything bad to say, by far the best car ive ever owned! Everytime i drive this car i am shocked by how smooth yet fast and grippy it is. Good handling without the bad ride. The fuel consumption isnt great but if you have one of these you shouldnt really care! The interior is solid and looks nice with all the possible ...

In terms of size and market position, the S60 is a spacious five seater "premium" saloon, competing with the Audi A4, BMW 3 and 5 Series (it sits midway between the two in terms of size), Jaguar X-Type, Mercedes C-Class, Saab 9-3 and VW Passat.
WHICH SPECIFIC MODEL?
Those of you who habitually read my car reviews may remember me, last summer, reviewing the top of the range petrol powered S60, the 260bhp T5 Sport. I concluded that review by saying that yes, it was a good car, but that there was a far better, and less expensive, VolvoS60 available in the form of the D5 - the five cylinder 163bhp diesel powered version.
Confusingly, since writing that review, that model - the one that I am specifically reviewing here, has been renamed - it is now the 2.4D, the D5 badge being transferred to the latest, more ...

This is the 2.4 Litre, 5 Cylinder (Diesel) VolvoS60
My Dad owns this car but i borrowed it for a few days when i needed a car to drive around in.
I only took out a temporary insurance deal with norwich union which, for 2 weeks, cost me £71.40 which is expensive, but i only needed it for 2 weeks and i wasnt going to pay £4k for a years cover (just because im 18)
The boot space is good and is plenty for shopping, or luggage, although if you carry equipment around which is bulky, you may have a problem, because being a saloon, the boot opening is fairly small.
Although the engine has 163 Bhp which dosent sound a lot for a car this size when you see cars like my mates Renault Clio having 197 Bhp, but the car squeezes every last drop of power and the clio is no match on acceleration or top speed.
