He sat in it, as did I and the interior is swedish perfection, it may look like plastic, but the feel about the interior is brilliant. Dont get me wrong, my father insisted that he would never get a volvo. but as it happens, this car changed it all... The Volvo S60 itself is to be honest, one of the best looking saloon cars out there, with the look of business-man about it. You turn up in this and you feel business like and most importantly in my eyes, special. When a car pulls that off, you know its good. My father previously owned a Volkswagen Bora 1.9 TDi, which in his mind was the best, most economical car going. It was one night when car shopping that I directed him towards the Volvo garage. We looked around and instantly saw the s60.
The distinctive looks struck us in the forecourt. He sat in it, as did I and the interior is swedish perfection, it may look like plastic, but the feel about the interior is brilliant. The centre console is pointed slightly towards the driver side, which is one of the buying points, it doesnt just look stuck on, as a rushed job by the manufacturer.
I havent even got to the engine, its a 5 cyclinder 2398cc turbo charged monster of an engine, with 0-60 times calculated at 7.6 seconds (Manual) and 8.1 seconds (Automatic) with top speeds of 143mph (Manual) and 140mph (Automatic). Thats fast compared to the similarly sized BMW's, Ford's and the like. I didnt know a diesel engine could pack so much punch. You put the foot down and you are thrown back in your seat, that is if the car decides it wants to..... This is mainly down to the auto tiptronic gearbox, it calculates all the variables and make up its mind what kind of driving mood you are in, and it will act accordingly.. for example motorway driving it will be more subdued and luxurious, or if your going for a back road thrash, it will give the engine more throttle responsiveness. however break your driving patterns and it will take a moment to adjust.
Economy - Combined = 37.9 and this is near constant. I watch the MPG meter on the dash and it rarely moves from this figure.
Ride comfort is another surprising aspect of this car, it is firm, but comfortable. Holds the road well and will hold it in a way which is comfortable, however slam your breaks on, and then it is not so comfortable..... Situations arise which need drastic measure, for example, a motorcyclist going 60 suddenly deciding to slow to 30 right infront of you. The S60's braking power is pretty immense, the electronic brake assist takes the brake pedal away from your foot when in instant braking situations and stops it rather suddenly, my face was nearly part of the windscreen to put it mildly.
However be warned of the Insurance Group, it is group 16. So its pretty high, this is for the D5 SE model. I do not know whether a different model means a lower insurance group.
And all for a reasonable price tag, this being one of the top spec models, you get quite a fair amount of extras.
Advantages: General loveliness. Disadvantages: Fiddley to replace headlamp bulbs.
...the world.
Exterior is typical volvo quality somehow manages to look a cut above mid-range cars.
The 2.4 D5 diesel engine is an absolute gem (at least so far). Nice sound to it ;hard to believe it's a diesel. It's truly punchy and can surprise you with its acceleration and eats up motorway miles easily. (0-60 approx 8.0secs. Top speed 143mph)
The best thing for me is the fuel consumption I regularly get 41 - 43 in general driving. But most remarkably ... ...of 330 miles I got 62mpg!!!
Admittedly there were no hold ups at all on the journey and I drove carefully but not too slowly. I filled up before I left and drove 660 miles in total there and back and still had a weeks worth of petrol for gadding about on. At the start of the journey I had to drive many miles in a 50mph zone and reached 67.5 mpg. If I'd carried on all the way at that speed i felt sure I could have achieved 70mpg.
The disadvantages ...

Advantages: Comfortable, high performance, economical, reliable Disadvantages: Fairly expensive, small boot, not too much room in back
Bought this car new in May 2003. Best car I have ever had. Diesel D5 engine is reliable and very powerful, better than most petrols, and gives 45mpg easily. Build quality good but wish I'd gone for SE model as it is loaded with all extras. The S model comes with basic features and you have to order all the extras you want. Eats tyres, particularly front, quite quickly but that may be due to my driving. Handling in all conditions excellent due to traction control etc. Pulls 16ft caravan effortlessly, you almost forget the caravasn is there. Driving position fully adjustable and will accommodate a tall (6ft 3in) driver with no problem but tall people may have difficulty sitting on the back seats. One downside is that the boot is a bit on the small size. It's smaller than a Mondeo boot. Thinking of changing to V70 diesel estate as we now ...

Advantages: The original, oldest and the best. Disadvantages: Expensive, tends to be very pro-German marques
on the market (less comprehensive than the "What Car" data fest though) but also a good range of performance and fuel consumption figures derived from their road tests. You will however find a few gaps, once a newly launched car becomes a little "less new" it never tends to get tested, I have for years waited in vein for a road test of the VolvoS60D5 for instance.
My, and other regular readers from comments made in the excellent (and often criticising) letters page, main moan about this magazine tends to be that anything carrying a German badge is by default better than anything else on the market, you'll have to live with that though - I have for over 30 years now and well remember road tests raving about BMW 2002's and the first Golf GTi.
My interest centres on road cars, generally practical ones at that. If you are a Formula 1 or WRC ...
