Dont get me wrong, my father insisted that he would never get a volvo. but as it happens, this car changed it all... The Volvo S60 itself is to be honest, one of the best looking saloon cars out there, with the look of business-man about it. You turn up in this and you feel business like and most importantly in my eyes, special. When a car pulls that off, you know its good. My father previously owned a VolkswagenBora 1.9 TDi, which in his mind was the best, most economical car going. It was one night when car shopping that I directed him towards the Volvo garage. We looked around and instantly saw the s60.
The distinctive looks struck us in the forecourt. He sat in it, as did I and the interior is swedish perfection, it may look like plastic, but the feel about the interior is brilliant. The centre console is pointed slightly towards the driver side, which is one of the buying points, it doesnt just look stuck on, as a rushed job by the manufacturer.
I havent even got to the engine, its a 5 cyclinder 2398cc turbo charged monster of an engine, with 0-60 times calculated at 7.6 seconds (Manual) and 8.1 seconds (Automatic) with top speeds of 143mph (Manual) and 140mph (Automatic). Thats fast compared to the similarly sized BMW's, Ford's and the like. I didnt know a diesel engine could pack so much punch. You put the foot down and you are thrown back in your seat, that is if the car decides it wants to..... This is mainly down to the auto tiptronic gearbox, it calculates all the variables and make up its mind what kind of driving mood you are in, and it will act accordingly.. for example motorway driving it will be more subdued and luxurious, or if your going for a back road thrash, it will give the engine more throttle responsiveness. however break your driving patterns and it will take a moment to adjust.
Economy - Combined = 37.9 and this is near constant. I watch the MPG meter on the dash and it rarely moves from this figure.
Ride comfort is another surprising aspect of this car, it is firm, but comfortable. Holds the road well and will hold it in a way which is comfortable, however slam your breaks on, and then it is not so comfortable..... Situations arise which need drastic measure, for example, a motorcyclist going 60 suddenly deciding to slow to 30 right infront of you. The S60's braking power is pretty immense, the electronic brake assist takes the brake pedal away from your foot when in instant braking situations and stops it rather suddenly, my face was nearly part of the windscreen to put it mildly.
However be warned of the Insurance Group, it is group 16. So its pretty high, this is for the D5 SE model. I do not know whether a different model means a lower insurance group.
And all for a reasonable price tag, this being one of the top spec models, you get quite a fair amount of extras.
