The Volvo S80 is the Volvo flagship and inherits the build quality and reliability that Volvo is renown for. The smooth six-cylinder engine is quiet and reliable but if pushed can be thirsty with less than 18 mpg. Its not a BMW 528 and so you cant throw the S80 around in the same manner; but on the other hand its built with so many safety features you are at least safe and extremely comfortable. Its capable of 145 mph where the plod turn a blind eye and at 100 mph your passengers will never guess your going that fast!

Volvo servicing is excellent and the agents tend to “look” after you like no other dealers, but again don’t expect cheap prices this is a £30,000+ car and when it does need parts, they wont be cheap!

Comfort is the big thing with this car, the moment you sink into the leather interior and adjusting the seat, electronic memory for 3 drivers plus adjusting the steering to suit you just know its going to be a great journey.

The standard extras come thick and fast with this one, there’s a great stereo system with a single CD, automatic with winter setting and geartronic system to let you paddle your way to the front. Sat navigation with a screen that pops out of the dash where the speaker should be and tells you where to go! Fold in electric mirrors for when parking in tight spots and reversing aid sensors to tell you to stop before you have damaged the paintwork. It can’t make tea and first thing in the morning the heated leather seats wont wake you from your slumber heating both the seat and the backrest!

While Volvo have some way to go to get it right on sports handling, the T6 version can be a pig on skids if you don’t use the power carefully. The S80 2.9 provides the safety of a battleship with the comfort of a cruise liner. Enjoy and be happy!

I was put off Volvos after having a 480 Turbo some years ago and it turned out to be a right lemon!
