The Volvo V70 estate was brought into the market by Volvo to replace its ageing 850 range. The 1997-2000 V70's boast several exterior improvements over the 850 including reshaped front and side lights, and body coloured bumpers and door handles.

We bought our 1999 V70 for about £13,000, though expect to pay up to 5 grand more if you decide to buy through a dealer or specialist.

The car is a 2.5L Turbo Diesel, and was our first diesel car. We were surprised at the acceleration of the car, and even though it sounds like a van when your in traffic, it has a nice 'howl' when you put the pedal to the metal. Official Volvo stats record the V70 TD getting to 60 in around 8.5 seconds. The car does a little under 40mpg on the motorway, and a little under 35mph when accelerating heavily in towns or in traffic. There is also a lack of the huge black smog cloud that arises from the exhaust pipe of so many other diesel powered cars when they touch the gas.

Our V70 came with tinted glass, alloy wheels rear spoiler, and looks like a nice car. Unfortunately, it still isnt a car for boxophobic people.

Volvo did several handling tweaks in the V70, and has far less body roll than the 850 and previous Volvos.

The interior is improved over the 850 and has a rounded dashboard and rounded door cutouts. The doors are still 3 inches thick, but open more easily because of their redesigned handles. Volvo also moved the electric window buttons from in between the seats, to on the doors meaning you arent as distracted when you are driving and want to open the window. Seats and sun-visors are the same as in the 850, but are still extremely comfortable and were voted to be the best seats out of any car in its class.

Bootspace is in abundance, and you can easily fit a months worth of shopping or the entire families suitcases in it, in true volvo style.

Running costs are one of the most expensive aspects of the car, and its reccomended that the car be serviced at an official volvo dealership, or one licenced to maintain volvo cars. Services can cost around £400 if anything needs replacing. Brake discs are very expensive, and may need replacing before or after you buy the car.

You can compare prices of Volvo V70's on sites such as Autotrader.co.uk .
