The car is a 2004 (2005 MY) Volvo V70 D5 S. The D5 is a 2.4 litre "common rail" diesel and the S spec has cloth seats, climate control, fuel computer, and a single CD / FM Radio (which at least has LW for the cricket). Mine has a very light interior (they call it Oak) and the dashboard causes a lot of stray reflections on the windscreen - not good for night driving.
The V70 is a nice looking car but it does not have the robust build and quality of finish that have been associated with Volvo in the past. It is also not the supreme load carrier that Volvos once were - you get a much bigger load space with a Mondeo.
My V70 has proved to be a very disappointing car with numerous days (24 in 6 months) spent off of the road and too many instances of recurrence of faults, e.g.
- central locking / immobiliser - sticking tailgate - bad starting - random message displays - loss of entire instrument system - climate control resets / switches off after 20 minutes
I rate the overall build qualty as very poor, there are simply too many trim rattles (especially from the dashboard and load area). The seat fabric is also of poor quality and I have had to have the rear seta covering replaced (it took 4 months to source the parts).
The D5 engine gets rave reviews from many magazines but it is noisy (even for a diesel) and does not deliver anything more than moderate performance. I also find that the 34mpg average from mainly motorway use is not as expected, though this is better than the 28mpg that was achieved I first had the car. The injectors and ECM (engine control module) have both been replaced in an attempt to cure a persistent poor starting problem and to try to make it run smoother and consume less fuel.
The V70 is a complicated car, probably too complicated, and the electrical systems on mine have been very troublesome. To date the CEM (central electrical module), UEM (upper electrical module) and ECM (engine control module) have been replaced and the DIM (Driver's Information Module) has been faulty from day one. Mostly the problems do not cause breakdowns but they do result in annoying "DTCS in Vehicle" messages being displayed on the driver's "Information Centre".
Front seats are very comfortable through the rear bench is less so and rear seat passenger also get badly affected by the soft and floaty ride of the car.
The standard audio system is not good with mediocre radio quality and rattling speakers, but the premium system (not on my car and an expensive extra) sounds very much better.
Bodywork fit and finish is good but not exceptional and the pearlescent paint is evenly applied but without the quality of, say, an Audi.
Dealer and manufacturer support is questionable. Volvo dealers seem to have a first resort of clearing fault (DTCS) codes and the underlying faults are left to recur - causing much frustration. There is a resgned acceptance that modern Volvos need constant and expensive maintenance.
Advantages: Comfortable, easy to drive, economical on long runs, spacious. Disadvantages: Dealer service cost high, turning lock not as good as 240,700 &800 series
I bought a 3 yr. old V70 D5 SE to replace my petrol engined 850 SE 2.5 10v. which was 12 yrs.old.Impressions as follows: comfort greatly improved, turning circle not as good-but can be lived with.Acceleration from start off is not quite the same, but once you are rolling it is superbly torquey, making overtaking easy. After 3 years of trying to make the 850 more economical I could get an average of 31.5 mpg. on a 1,300 m. trip to & around Scotland. This ... ...driving!! - enough said. Performance is more than adequate- if I wanted a sports car I would have got one ! Servicing is less frequent than with the 850, and so far I can only say it does everything I want very well-- would I go back to the petrol powered 850,.....NEVER!!..........................Ivan H. ...

...beyond.
Needless to say being Volvo there is plenty of safety features, with traction control, ABS, side impact protection, and passenger air curtains plus more.
With the V70 you will get a high specification car, with the same features usually costing much more on equivalents such as the BMW 5 series tourer, and with the benefit it is more spacious and versatile and no disadvantages.
If you want a large versatile car, large enough for the whole ... ...run or weekend trip to the tip, plus feel like luxury during the weekly commute to work then the V70 is the one for you.
In my oppinion it should be in the category of luxury cars, and indeed would be if it had a BMW badge on the front. ...

...old car to replace my volvo T4 which was getting a bit old.
I'd always liked the look of this model and decided to go for a diesel as economy should be better without too great a loss in performance.
If you want comy and supportive seats then you need look no further than this, the seats are truly superb. I guess that's one of the reasons so many police forces have these cars on traffic.
The upgrade dolby pro logic stereo is good if you sit in ... ...appalling, far too much bass and voice is difficult to pick out.
As for performance, it is a bit sluggish pulling away but mid range, say 40 to 70 mph it just flies. It makes overtaking a doddle and it's actually very easy to hit the tom without realising it.
Unfortunately, it also is not a cheap car to run. At service time main dealers were looking for over £400 - basically an oil and filter change.
If you want a big load lugging comfortable ...

...car is a RAV4, the Volvo is the normal choice for longer distances. Give me the RAV in winter though!
Servicing costs have been as good as could be expected. I normally pay about £220 for a service every 12,000 miles at a Volvo garage. A few minor problems, but nothing serious. Corroded brake disc at 36,000 miles (replaced under warranty). Recurring problems with cargo net and rear seatbelt jamming inside the back seat (hopefully now solved). The ...

Advantages: Space, comfortable driving position and fuel economy Disadvantages: Wide turning circle
Our second V70 (03/2003 2.4 D5 SE) is not likely to be our last. Volvo's reliability and good after sales service befits the premium brand. The car is supremely comfortable, bags of space and we're never stuck for room lugging golf clubs, dog, baby stuff, etc. Performance is good on the diesel - a definite improvement from the old one (was a 2000 V 2.5D which was an old Audi A6 engine in fact); much quieter and very gutsy. Best performance is overtaking from 50mph onwards.
The automatic does affect fuel economy a bit, but averaging 35-40 mpg and it's a combination of motorway/A road driving.
The one detraction is the turning circle is worse than on the old model but this is only a nuisance really in tight car parks.
Servicing is £300-ish but no probs yet with the car, as you would expect from such a workhorse.
Despite us ...

Advantages: Swift, Well Made, Indestructable Disadvantages: depreciation, service costs
The VolvoV70 estate was brought into the market by Volvo to replace its ageing 850 range. The 1997-2000 V70's boast several exterior improvements over the 850 including reshaped front and side lights, and body coloured bumpers and door handles.
We bought our 1999 V70 for about £13,000, though expect to pay up to 5 grand more if you decide to buy through a dealer or specialist.
The car is a 2.5L Turbo Diesel, and was our first diesel car. We were surprised at the acceleration of the car, and even though it sounds like a van when your in traffic, it has a nice 'howl' when you put the pedal to the metal. Official Volvo stats record the V70 TD getting to 60 in around 8.5 seconds. The car does a little under 40mpg on the motorway, and a little under 35mph when accelerating heavily in towns or in traffic. There is also a lack ...
