The V70 D5 is a very spacious car indeed. You can fit a family of five in the car with ease, still leaving a massive boot space for the biggest of suitcases and childrens artilery. With a flick of a button the rear seats are folded away rapidly to leave a perfectly flat luggage area large enough to fit a double matress. It is even possible to carry 3meter long items such as copper pipe and still close the rear tailgate. The choice of diesel is no loss on the petrol versions, the performance being near equal with 185Bhp output, and fuel economy delivering over 50mpg on stretches of dual carriageway or motorways. Put the accellerator to the floor and you will cruise past most other cars with ease making overtaking manouvers safe.
The D5 engine does sound noisey when cold, but after a few minutes this dies away and settles down to a gentle hum of a more smooth refined engine, that you dont notice after a while.
Quality is visually apparent in the V70 with all fixings being solid construction and well finished with that bit extra that makes the difference to a good car. Doors close with little effort and with a reasurring solid clunk which protrays the solid design. The V70 comes with generous finish as standard, if the budget allows go for the SE version which has leather finish and lots of gadgets and upgrades to the equipment for a just little bit more. If you really want luxury then have the luxury hide finish which also provides more cusioning on the seats to give the best quality seats in any vehicle of it's class and beyond. Needless to say being Volvo there is plenty of safety features, with traction control, ABS, side impact protection, and passenger air curtains plus more.
With the V70 you will get a high specification car, with the same features usually costing much more on equivalents such as the BMW 5 series tourer, and with the benefit it is more spacious and versatile and no disadvantages.
If you want a large versatile car, large enough for the whole family, able to carry most houshold items, do the B&Q run or weekend trip to the tip, plus feel like luxury during the weekly commute to work then the V70 is the one for you.
In my oppinion it should be in the category of luxury cars, and indeed would be if it had a BMW badge on the front.
