I have to admit that I bought the T5 because I couldn't find a good standard turbo V70. You're unlikely to pay a premium when purchasing a used T5, but the extra running costs could prove prohibitive. I manage an average of 27 mpg on mostly motorwaydriving and I'm now seriously considering a conversion to LPG.
Running costs aside, it's a very nice car to own. The boot space is second to none in this sector, and the seats are perfect for long motorway runs. All controls fall easily to hand and the automatic gearbox works well. The T5 is great for overtaking and the traction control system is very good on wet roads. I haven't had a chance to test it on ice yet. The only other minor complaint is the turning circle - but what can you expect for a car this size?
There have been a couple of faults;
1. The electric throttle module (a known problem with several Volvo models) was replaced, fortunately under warranty. The old throttle was giving jerky starts from stationary, but later the car cut out when driving round a car park. Automatics shouldn't stall! My new module is about 8,000 miles old and might be having a few problems again.
2. The car won't start when there's less than about 40 miles worth of fuel left. I haven't had it cut out, the problem appears when it's been standing overnight. I've had the fuel pickup from the tank replaced (apparently there's a design fault), but that hasn't solved the problem. Perhaps there's a slight leak on one of the fuel pipes.
Overall, I'm very happy with this car and intend to keep it for a long time.
