I first came across this site when reading a review by Bigbaz, for whom I have a lot of respect, so I went to have a look and this is what I found.
Vox Populi, taken from the Latin and meaning “Voice of the People” is a web-site with a difference. There are several Ciao external forum sites, as you may know, but none quite like this. Registering to use the site is quick and requires minimal information, after which you are taken to the Portal page, from where you can gain access to other parts of the site.
First Impressions:
I liked the appearance of the site, although the initial colour scheme was not to my taste. There is, however, a choice of skins to suit your own requirements and the general layout is very clear. There is, however, another purpose behind the default skin other than just one of visual appeal; the colours have been chosen to enable those with dyslexia to see the print more clearly, following scientific evidence that colour can affect the perception of the person trying to read the printed word.
From the portal page it is possible to access the forums, to check if you have mail, to see who is on site and what the most recent topics of conversation have been about. The control panel, at the top of the page, allows you to personalize your signature, choose your own avatar and create your own profile.
Areas of interest:
In common with other sites there are various forums to choose from, but it is then the difference rapidly becomes apparent. There are a wealth of subjects to choose from, ranging from Motoring categories right through to Computer Software. Each of the forums has a dedicated moderator of whom you can ask questions on the various topics contained within each of the forums.
VPC proudly hosts its own members advertisement area, Freebay, where members’ can buy and sell items of a non-commercial nature. No charges are made for using this area, apart from those of postage and packing, costs of which rest with the buyer/seller.
If, on the other hand, you want some light -hearted banter, or want to talk about something not in the listed forums, there is an area called Chit Chat Central, where the conversations range from the cerebral to the light-hearted and amusing. The range of subjects in this area is amazingly diverse and interesting and it is a very good place for newcomers to join in and start posting.
The team behind Vox Populi have a wealth of experience and they are all very approachable and friendly. A few of them I recognised from other Ciao related sites and so I soon felt at home, swapping information and joining in the banter. It is hard to imagine that the site has only been in existence for a relatively short time, given the close-knit community feel.
A floating menu has been incorporated into the forums, leading to sub sections where you can find a calendar and product proposals and so on. You can also keep track of personal events (birthdays, christening etc) on your calendar; they are only visible to you. When a selected date arrives a reminder then appears on your page.
There are two games areas on the site which are hosted by subsidiary servers. David, the genius behind the site, tries to accommodate different tastes in games and has included both classical and retro-style gaming. There are also various “chat areas” where you can go along and have a natter if it takes your fancy.
Conclusion:
If you want somewhere to wile away some time, in good company, this is an excellent site to visit. This is an addictive and fun place, where you can learn about a vast array of subjects or just chill out and enjoy some congenial company.
