WKD Original Vodka Blue

WKD is one of the many alcopops drinks currently on the market.

There are three types of WKD - Irn Bru, Silver and Blue and today Matthew I’m going to be Blue. Sorry, thought I was on Stars in your Eyes for a moment………..

I first tried the wonderful WKD in a bar in Scotland about two and a half years ago. I remember seeing it on a shelf behind the bar wanting to try it just because of it’s lovely colour! However, I asked for a W K D and was gruffly told by the barman that in future I should ask for a Wicked. That was the pronounciation sorted, now onto the drink.

The latest bottle of blue WKD that I bought was from the corner shop, which retailed at £1.29 although I think they are a lot cheaper in Tesco’s if bought in packs of four.

The product is in a clear glass bottle with no fancy designs or lettering.

On the front of the bottle is a dark blue rectangle with the lettering WKD and underneath that is written Original Vodka Blue.

The appearance of the drink is what grabs everyone’s attention. It is a beautiful aqua blue colour, which reminds me of the ice pops you can get from most shops, that all the kids seem to love in the Summer.

There is 5.5% alcohol by volume in the 275 ml bottles, which makes the product stronger than Budweisers – amazing as these alcopop type drinks are aimed at the younger end of the market!

The ingredients are a bit vague to say the least as it states that the product is made up of a sparking alcoholic premix (which doesn’t mean a lot to me!!) Also states that this includes fruit flavours and triple distilled vodka. Now I’m aware of what vodka is, but I would like a bit more explanation of the fruit flavours so off I head off to the website at www.wkd.co.uk.

The website for the product is quite good. There’s some naughty postcards that you can send to your friends, there’s a nice lady who will pole dance for you, providing you have shockwave, once you register as a member you can download screensavers and wallpaper, but while registering, you have to provide them with your favourite naughty thought, there’s also some rather rude games, and a great prank e-mail service, from which I sent a mail to Steve’s boss about joining the Swingers Club, but for the life of me I couldn’t find out ANYTHING about the ingredients for about half an hour. When I eventually found the link, it was the last one on the home page Grrrrrrr, it still didn’t tell me anything as the blend is secret!

The smell of the product is rather like the raspberry flavoured ice pops, quite a sweet smell but very pleasant.

The taste is very, very sickly but also quite moreish. I know that a lot of people tend to only have a couple of these because of the sweetness but I could drink a fair few before regurgitating the contents of my stomach. That said, these are relatively strong and it doesn’t take that many to have an effect on your brain and your co-ordination. The product tastes predominantly of raspberry, again very similar to an ice pop and to be honest I can’t taste the alcohol in it.

So to sum up, I think this product is wonderful, it tastes gorgeous, even if a little sickly and I could happily keep drinking it for the benefit of consumer opinion. Hic!
