Alcopops are as necessary to clubbers as a tin of spinach is to Popeye. When you are dancing all night until the break of dawn, you need something sugary to give you the energy to dance some more and something that tastes good too. Beer is a big ‘no no’ if you are going clubbing as you are more than likely to throw it back up on a friend shirt. Alcopops are good because you can drink them and dance as much as you like and not risk the frothiness making you feel sickly.
Alcopops used to be something of a drink for the ladies when Bacardi Breezers were the main alcopop around, however WKD has changed things as it is more of a unisex alcopop and can be enjoyed by men without certain allegations being made about their sexuality! The television adverts shows WKD as being a ‘lads’ drink, as it shows a group of lads who, like any blokes between 20 and 35, play tricks on each other. WKD is an abbreviation of Wicked, thus making the slogan “Have you got a WKD side” make some sense.
WKD comes in three flavours, Orange (Iron Bru), Silver (God only knows), and blue. The blue WKD has a hard to describe flavour but it is very nice. It is a sort of fruity taste but something I cannot quite put my finger on. It isn’t sickly sweet like other alcopops are and it is very refreshing and energising to keep you dancing a bit longer! The drink isn’t particularly strong (5.5%) and comes in 275ml bottles the same as bottles beers come in. You can drink a quite a few WKD’s before you are drunk, which can be perceived as positive or negative depending on what exactly your objectives are!
The WKD blue is a very bright shade of blue, making it stand out quite well. It comes in a regular glass bottle with “WKD original vodka blue” written on it. As far as pricing goes, it is £1.29 a bottle from a supermarket or off-license (although cheaper if you buy mutlipacks of 6 or 12) but in a bar or club you may pay up to £2.50 depending on how much of an over-pricing lunatic the landlord is and whether or not you are drunk enough to pay it.
WKD blue does have a smell that reminds me of raspberry Slush Puppies, and is scented more like a soft drink than an alcopop. The smells is altogether very pleasant.
The WKD adverts aren’t the only things that incite playing pranks on your friends, the WKD website (www.wkd.co.uk) offers a range of different ways to play practical jokes on your friends, and you can even get a virtual pole dance if you have a shockwave plug in. There are also screen savers, backgrounds for your desktop amongst other things for you to download.
WKD Blue plays an important mark in my patented (well, not really) alcoholic drinks mix, see below:
- Take a large tumbler and fill a third of it with Fanta orange (chilled) - Fill another third of it with WKD blue (Do not stir it) - Put 3 shots of white rum in the glass (can be substituted for vodka if you have no white rum) - Top the rest of the glass up with cider - Give the drink a few minutes to settle, it is ready when it is a greeny/turquoise colour - Probably best shared with 2-3 other people as it is pretty strong
This goes to show that WKD can be enjoyed in numerous ways. Be sure to experiment and you may stumble across a funky concoction of your own!
WKD blue is a delicious drink that isn’t over priced (at least not at supermarkets) and can be enjoyed at home or if you are in a bar or nightclub. The product is of a high quality and the taste makes it very moreish. WKD is an alcopop that can be enjoyed by men and women and changes things from the days when alcopops were ‘a woman’s drink’.

WKD is drink for people who don't want to taste the alcohol. Its got a revolting amount of sugar in it to disguise the taste that would otherwise be there. Alcopops like this are so easy to drink (if you can stomach such sweetness) and for that reason are often consumed in massive quantities - which is unbelievably bad for your body. Most of you guys don't actually realise how much you're damaging yourself by doing that. Then again you'd be quick to say that you don't care. Drinking this rubbish once a day for a week intead of seven on a Saturday would even be far healthier - of course, you wouldn't be smashed then. Seriously, people who drink this need to grab a beer and grow up, setting the health stuff aside, this tastes like an extremely sugary syrup - which in my opinion is just gross.
Advantages: once consumed (if you dare) the bottle becomes a useful weapon on the barman that served you this filth Disadvantages: where do i begin????
