This wonderful little graphics tablet is the perfect consumer-level option. Whilst Wacom certainly do make tablets that are far, far better than this (the Cintiq, and Intuos, for instance), the upgrades on these will be useful only for high-end professionals. This does not mean that the Bamboo is only for the amateur doodler, however - it just means that unless you're a professional architect, Bamboo is the option for you. The Bamboo is the latest generation of consumer-level Wacom tablets, and Wacom are the market leaders in digitisers.
The Bamboo is a very sleek, very stylish, thin black slab that can sit beside your keyboard or mousemat. It connects via USB to your computer and on most systems will start working straightaway; if not it also comes with an installation CD. Using this CD is advisable, because even if the Bamboo works straight off, the CD will install even more functionality. In Windows Vista, installing the Bamboo unlocks the Tablet PC functions of Vista, allowing you to hand-write into any text-box that appears on the system. That is, everywhere you'd usually type, you can now hand-write instead, and Vista will convert it to text. Of course, this is an optional feature. Other unlocked Vista features include pen-flick navigation - special flicks of the pen can be used to navigate around the computer - for instance, a quick backwards flick will go Back. This also works in Internet Explorer.
The Bamboo also comes with a copy of Wacom's JustWrite Office, which expands the 2007 Microsoft Office System, allowing you to write into documents (e.g. Word, Excel) in natural handwriting, make notes, annotations, sign, etc.
The Bamboo itself works very well indeed. The active area has a very, very decent size - at least 6 by 4 inches. Although this is a lot small than a sheet of paper (it's about A6), do not be fooled - this is all the size you will need. Indeed, getting a bigger tablet than this might make things harder for you! The reason is that the active area (the rectangle upon which placing the pen makes something happen) is mapped directly to your screen. Placing the pen in the top left corner of the active area on the digitiser will make the mouse-pointer on-screen snap immediately to the top-left. Likewise placing the pen on the bottom-right corner snaps the mouse to the bottom-right. There is no need to "drag" the mouse between these two locations. As the active area is mapped directly to your screen, you can access any part of it instantly without having to drag your mouse or hand a great distance, as you classically might have to. This is why the 6 by 4 inches size is perfect - if it was larger, you'd actually have to move your hand and wrist to access different parts of your screen. However at this ample size your entire screen is literally a pen-flick away.
The really wonderful thing about the active area on the Bamboo is that it's made of some material that feels like paper. When you drag the stylus across it to draw a line, it really feels like you're drawing a line across a piece of paper. This is a huge advantage - it not only makes you draw more naturally, it reduces mistakes. Other digitisers will have a very smooth, shiny surface, which your pen will slip straight across, causing all sorts of wobbles and uneven lines. The Bamboo has just the right amount of traction to it.
Along the top of the Bamboo are 4 function buttons and a special scroll-wheel. The function buttons can be set to perform things like change between windows, open programs, go Back, etc. The scroll wheel is particularly nice - it doubles up as a zoom wheel too. Running your finger around it zooms in and out (one circular direction or the other) and tapping the top or bottom scrolls up or down.
The stylus itself comes with a nice stand. It can be place into the stand vertically like a quill, or laid down on it horizontally. It feels nice to hold, and is covered in a smooth gripping rubber. It has two buttons - one for a right-click (tapping with the stylus is a left-click), and another for a pan-and-drag function. That is, if you hold the second button on the stylus, and then move the stylus across an internet page, or a picture, it will pan and drag the page/picture around. Turning the stylus upside-down will (in most programs) instantly switch to the eraser function, allowing you to rub out strokes in a traditional way.
The Bamboo recognises 512 levels of pressure. If you press harder with the stylus, it will notice. In programs such as Photoshop, this can be used to control how dark the stroke will come out, or how large, or even what colour (and so on). Although the higher-end tablets (Intuos and Cintiq) typically are capable of recognising 1024 levels of pressure-sensitivity, I have found that the 512 levels are more than enough to capture every subtlety.
Overall, this is the ultimate graphics tablet for the majority of users. It has a good price, it has lots of functions, it works beautifully and it looks good. If you're into digital art, like the idea of a tablet PC, want to sign documents, or just want to doodle, this little digitiser is the one for you.
Advantages: easy to use, accurate Disadvantages: pen feels a bit cheap, distracting blue LED
...will have heard the name Wacom -- they're the manufacturer of input devices for professionals, and their budget range gives a good slice of the magic without such a big slice of the money pie! If you're not familiar with graphics tablets, the concept is fairly simple -- drawing or photo-editing with a mouse is a thankless and painful experience; no matter how accomplished you are with the beast, it's never going to feel as intuitive as good ol' ... ...this is the first low-end Wacom to come with a double-ended pen: if your software supports it (and most does), flipping the pen over turns the end into an "eraser" which does exactly what anyone who's ever used a pencil would expect. In addition to the eraser, the pen sports 256 levels of pressure sensitivity, two programmable buttons on the side (by default one acts as a right click), and comes with a spare point. The tablet also features a number ...

Advantages: Battery free pen, easy to use, highly configurable, durable, great look! Disadvantages: JustWrite Office note Vista compatible - the only bad thing I can say which isn't a lot
...later I heard about the Wacom Bamboo online and thought I'd take a look at it. Since then I've gone out and bought one as I was so impressed by how it sounded but I was also worried that my expectations were being built up as with the Nisis before. I couldn't have been more wrong.
Where do I start? Then 'pen' itself is very comfortable to use, one solid piece with no batteries required but enough weight so as not to feel cheap. It's coated in what ... ...that feels smooth to the touch and is much better than a plastic version would be. As has been mentioned it has 512 levels of pressure sensitivity meaning you can make very thin, light strokes or thick, hard strokes - that's assuming your software has the ability to support it of course. The pen also has an 'eraser' on the top which is basically a rounded and smooth piece of plastic. In supported programs you flip the pen over and rub out what ever ...

Advantages: Best on the low level market, great design, great drivers ad features. Disadvantages: not the cheapest graphics tablet, averagely sized active zone.
...cheaper choices because i know wacom is a company i can trust, them being the world leader in graphics tablets. The product works well, although im not very good at using it its features and usage works well not only for drawing but as a complete substitute for a mouse. it will stop RSI and has reduced the pain i got from what i thought was carpal tunnel syndrome, It works very well with windows xp and its drivers integrate with minimal CPU usage. ... ...and in comparison to my wacom the difference is startling. the trust pads pen would eat through AAA batteries like nothing iv ever seen, the pen was bulky and it was in that horrible old computer color, the wacom is well designed, quite ironic considering its used for design. and all of its features work very well. its gloss and matte finish work great together and it is both technically and fashionably sound its pen is also battery free and nibs ...

Advantages: Smooth, pretty, responsive, amazingness on a stick. Disadvantages: No real ones
...flat plate type thing that comes with a special pen. You can use this to control your pointer so it makes drawing go a whole lot smoother and precise and navigating round your computer easier.
Not having a clue what type to go for, I decided to ask the ex (since terms are still on the good side) since he knows about this kind of thing. He pointed me towards anything by Wacom. After a little research it seems those dudes are pretty well known in the field of all things arty. They make nearly all of the graphics tablets out there. Seriously.
Looks
Being that retail therapy is all about getting pretty items, it would be useless to get something that is ugly. The Bamboo ?Fun? graphics pad is bloody pretty. It looks like it was manufactured by Nintendo to fit into the Wii with its very clean white tablet with a hints of blue and grey...

...If you're looking for something to improve your artistic ability, this is not the tool for you. Wacom don't sell miracles! But if you're looking for a tool that will make using your PC/Mac more flexible and natural feeling, this is the tablet for you.
At first using the tablet instead of a mouse is daunting, not having a button to click feels unnatural and the lightness with which you need to touch the pen to the tablet also seems strange, but after the first few hours of getting used to it, it becomes second nature.
Browsing the internet, using explorer and simple tasks like moving documents all feel like an extension of your fingertips as opposed to a heavy click-drag motion with a mouse. Simple browsing isn't the only place it improves your computer use. Editing photos, drawing or painting and even adding your signature to...
