Advantages: Speeds up your use of most things on Disadvantages: Extra pen tips are easily lost, pice.
...This is not just for drawing, I only dabble now and again in drawing/colouring on the computer, but I do to many other things with it, I got this for my 18th birthday and since then it has all but replaced my standard mouse. It didn't take too much time to get accustomed to the pen and now I very rarely use the mouse that come with it, only when I misplace the pen. Also you can change the settings for individual programs like sensitivity and the 4 buttons (duplicated on the other side)
The Wacom website has a downloads that are compatible with the tablet such as handwriting recognition, drawing programs etc. some are shareware and some trials.
If you don't want to spend the money on this you can do many of the "non-arty" things on a cheaper one.
Programs a Wacom can help with.

Advantages: Dead easy to use Disadvantages: The right click
...a pen instead that I decided to take the plunge and buy myself a tablet and see how it worked.
All the advice seemed to point to one supplier as well, which was Wacom who provide a whole range of such products and I decided to check out their Graphire package. Now I got myself a Graphire 2 set from PC World which retailed at about 70 notes, although the V2 package now seems to have largely been replaced by the upgraded Graphire 3. A quick search on the Amazon website offers the following as a reasonable indicative price guide for various parts of the whole Wacom range -
WacomIntuos2A6 USB Tablet £149.99
Intuous 2A4 regular tablet & pen and 4D mouse USB £399.99
Wacom Graphire A6 with Painter Classic USB £69.99
Wacom Intuous 2A5 USB Tablet £249.99
Wacom Intuous 2A6 serial tablet £134.99

Advantages: Comfortable stylus, not bottom range but not top range either Disadvantages: Slight scratches on the surface of the tablet are visible after a lot of use
...from the tablet whilst it is in range; this means that the stylus can be much more like a normal pen or pencil so it fits in your hand much better. Hovering 10mm above the surface is about the maximum range. Note that you don't have to touch the surface to move the cursor.
The Wacom Graphire 3 Classic series is Wacoms mid-range tablet. I opted for the A6 version, which I have to admit I was a little worried about thinking it might be too small, but the difference in price between the A6 and A5 is rather significant (or at least it was when I got mine in 2004). After using the tablet for the past year I can honestly say I'm actually glad I didn't go for a larger tablet. To get the full benefit of using a tablet I have it set to "absolute positioning" mode this means that if I put my stylus on the top left of the tablets active area...
