My dog eats Wafcol on the advice of his doctor. More specifically, he eats Wafcol Salmon & Potato because he is allergic to almost any food in sight, which is very trying for a Golden Retriever. Wafcol Salmon & Potato is almost the only manufactured food he is allowed to eat. He, of course, is completely oblivious to this, but I digress.
Having spent a small fortune on blood tests and vet’s bills and having been advised to feed him Wafcol, I looked at their website and came up wondering whether I could have saved myself lots of money just by visiting Wafcol online.
It is a very impressive website and well worth a visit, especially if you think your dog has food allergies. There is a very good section on Dietary Management and an Advisory Page.
Wafcol was originally famous for its top quality greyhound foods; today it has a comprehensive range of dog foods. In addition to the Greyhound range, Wafcol manufactures twelve other food products which include the ‘basic’ range for Puppy, Junior, Senior, Original, Chicken and Beef. However, the product range then becomes more specialised:
• Vegetarian – developed for dogs that cannot eat meat.
• Light – for overweight or less active dogs, this one is also useful for the control of blood sugar levels in diabetic dogs.
• Chicken & Corn – for dogs with intolerance to gluten. • Fish & Corn – again for gluten intolerance with fish as the main protein source.
• Lamb & Rice – hypoallergenic formula for dogs with a sensitive digestion.
• Salmon & Potato – a very significant product for managing food related allergies. Free from wheat gluten, barley, soya, maize, rye, oats, meat, poultry and dairy products. It has no artificial colouring and no added flavourings.
Each product in the range has its own packaging colour, so the one you want is easy to identify and pick up from the shelf. I buy the 3kg bags because of storage – once open the Salmon & Potato is a tad offensive to the human nose and my storage tin will only take 3kg – but larger bags are available. I have only found this product at Pets At Home; the vet did not stock it despite recommending it, and you cannot pick it up in any supermarkets that I know of.
Will your dog eat it? Well, on the one hand, my dog will eat anything; on the other hand, he had spent three years of his life doing just that. I wasn’t overly worried that he wouldn’t eat it; I was more worried that he would refuse to eat it after realising that it was all he was going to get. As it was, I weaned him off his usual food by mixing one with the other in varying proportions until he was only on Wafcol. I also gave him Wafcol as his biscuit rewards. He also gets treats of the real food he is allowed to eat from time to time and seems quite happy with his diet. Of course, he still steals any bread floating on the pond for the ducks, and will still eat anything given the opportunity but he was always like that. His skin condition is now fine and he looks wonderful.
One thing I have learned is that when I get another dog, Wafcol will be the food I feed it from the start. If the other products in the range are as good as this one, and I have no reason to think they wouldn’t be, then I feel I will be doing well by my dog. Prevention is better than cure.

I have a Shar-Pei and have to be very careful with her diet.

Wafcol is the stuff my dad always fed his greyhounds on. I didn't realise they did other stuff as well. Sounds good!
