I have been cutting my own hair for the last ten years as it saves me a lot of money and I like keeping my hair nice and short. I have owned various different pairs of clippers to do the job and the one I have had for the past three years and still currently use is the Wahl HomePro 100. It can be bought for less than £10 at the moment.
The Brand
Wahl is a well established brand and the company produces a wide range of professional and home grooming products. It claims to have invented the first practical electric hair clipper in 1919 and has continued to specialise in grooming products ever since then. This means that it is well known for producing high quality, innovative products.
Features
Mains Operated Hair Clipper
These clippers need to be plugged in to be used and the cord is long enough to allow lots of free movement. I have used clippers with rechargeable batteries in the past that do not have to be plugged in when used and this always resulted in inadequate power. I therefore prefer having a mains operated set of clippers that perform consistently rather than the benefit of not having to worry about a cord.
4 Attachment Combs
It is possible to cut hair from grade 1 to grade 4 with the attachment combs provided. These are very easy to attach and detach and they feel strong and durable so there is very little chance of them breaking. I usually only ever use the grade 2 comb as I like my hair to be that short. If you need higher grade combs (5 to 8) for longer hair then it is worth looking at the next model up from this one that comes with a lot more attachment combs.
Thumb Adjustable Taper Lever
This is a great little feature that allows you to fine tune the exact cutting grade you want by pushing the lever to extend or shorten the blade length. This means that although there are only 4 cutting attachments provided, you can cut at any interval between grades 0 to 4. Another great benefit of this is that you can make the cutting blades last a lot longer by varying the taper level slightly each time you use the clippers.
Blade Guard
This is a simple but effective plastic cover that attaches to the cutting blades in the same way as the attachment combs. This protects the cutting blades from being damaged when the clippers are not being used or are being transported anywhere.
Clipper Oil
A small bottle of oil is supplied to keep the cutting blades functioning properly. It is easy to apply a small amount of oil to the blades and it is recommended that you do this after each use. I only apply the oil to the cutting blades after every 5 or 6 haircuts and they still seem to work perfectly.
2 Year Warranty
The clippers are very well designed so there is not much chance that you will have to use the warranty provided. I have been using my clippers roughly once every 3 weeks for the last 3 years and have had absolutely no problems with them.
Other Items Included
You also receive a pair of scissors and a barber comb(I have never needed to use these) and a cleaning brush that is useful for getting all the hair off the blades after each use. The clippers are very easy to use so you do not really need the instruction booklet provided but it is very well written and provides some useful tips on how to get the best results from the clippers and the correct techniques to use when cutting hair with them.
Overall Opinion
The hair clippers are remarkably well designed and very durable. They are the first set of clippers I have owned that have lasted more than two years and I expect to get many more years use out of them.
They always give a consistent and clean cut and do not feel like they are ever losing power even when cutting through thick hair unlike all the other brands of clippers I have used in the past.
I like the fact that all the basic features you need are included with these clippers as well as some useful extras such as the adjustable taper lever.
Considering that they cost less than what you would pay for one haircut at most hairdressers and that they last such a long time, these clippers are a real bargain. Highly recommended.
