'...I may be some time.'

Advantages: An absolute work of art, reeking of craft
Disadvantages: Half a century has rendered it slightly dated 'on the ground'

the draughtsmanship: there is no set text. All of the pages were painstakingly drawn in pen and ink by the author, and the level of skill and patience exhibited is monumental. It speaks volumes that I have had people ask to borrow Wainwright guides with no interest in the hills whatsoever: they just wanted to gaze in awe at the calligraphy and the drawings. It would generally take an entire evening for AW to prepare a page, which puts the achievement of producing seven guides totalling over 2000 pages into an almost chilling perspective. (And also makes you wish you could canonise the first Mrs AW). On several levels, Wainwright was a man born out of time: he'd have made an excellent medieval monk. Wainwright Walks, Series 1 and 2 DVD Box Set

Advantages: Makes me and many others want to take to the hills to enjoy their beauty
Disadvantages: Episodes are short so not all the detail is there

This is a fantastic DVD box set for anybody who likes hillwalking particularly in the English Lake District. In the two series, Julia Bradbury of Crimewatch takes us on a journey into the mountains of the Lake District. The series is not only about the hills themselfs but also about the life and work of Alfred Wainwright who described in detail 214 fells in seven books call the Pictorial Guides. Julia climbs a new fell each episode and uses the Pictorial Guides to help on her ascent of the fells. She describes with a great passion the detail in the Pictorial Guides that Alfred Wainwright is famous for. Julia does many of the famous fells in the lakes including Scafell Pike, Castlecrag, Catbells, Haystacks, Bowfell and Crinkle Crags, Pillar, Helm Crag, Blencathra and High Street. Each walk is shown in detail and in each episode she ...

Rufus Wainwright Release the stars

Advantages: Pop genius
Disadvantages: Slight lack of quality control

angel wings. Tennant has cut out the more flamboyant and annoying bits and orchestral music dominates the album, though this time without swamping the poppier and quieter tunes. One song, however, still manages to close with a flourish from ?Phantom of the opera? complete with closing notes from a harp. To paraphrase, it?s pop, Jim, but not as we know it. Lyrically, the songs are about lust and relationships, thought the state of America also comes into it. Guitarist Richard Thompson, singers Neil Tennant and Martha Wainwright, pianist Sian Phillips and Joan as Policewoman all appear. ...
