I love Walmarts in America, the fact their open 24 hours, and you can buy everything from your washing machine, bread, prescriptions and jewellery all in the same shop. So being an expat, i was excited to find out that a Asda-Walmart was opening about 15 miles up the road from me.
If you've ever been in an American one, don't expect the same thing when you walk into one in England. Its not that they are bad, they are just very different.
The car park can be a nightmare to navagate, and i thank god i dont drive every time we pull up there. However, its not difficult finding a parking space, however, it can be difficult getting anything except a Smart Car into one. On the plus size, its nice to see that there are hardly ever "stray" baskets in the car park, and they are kept very under control, so much less chances of getting those annoying "runaway trolly dinks" in your car.
There is always a greeter at the door to welcome you, which is a very nice touch. I've never walked past without a hello, although in busier times, its a group hello, but its nice to see the effort none the less.
The fruit & veg is of good quality, however i do find if you go late in the day you can never seem to get a bunch of bananas.
They have a very wide selection of fresh baked goods, and the quality is always very good. Their hedgehog loaves of fresh bread are second to none. Although once again, if you leave it until too late in the day, the stock is nearly empty.
The one thing i love, with being an expat, is that there's always a selection of products which i either can't get anywhere else, or are very hard to find without paying obscene prices elsewhere, including Skippy Peanut Butter, Reeses Peanut Butter Cups, Hershey's Syrup & Rootbeer.
Asda's own brand of products are always good quality, and do exceed what you would expect for the price of the goods.
They are starting to expand on their range of household appliances, and i was happy to see that they were offering them at very competitive prices. Their DVD prices are fantastic as well, although the displays and ease of finding what you are after is not the best system i've seen. It can be difficult to find exactly what you are looking for, as a lot of the time, they are just lobbed on the stands with no thought at all. The same goes for their CD & Video Game selections.
All in all the shop is good, and very clean, although being of such a large size, it can take a good 3 + hours to go around, especially on a busy day. They could definately do with more express lanes as well, as they tend to stay so busy you can be in the shop 30 minutes when all you need is a loaf of bread.
The toilet leave a little to be desired as well, but are about average for a public toilets.
One thing to say though, is that all of the staff are super friendly, and unlike at a lot of high street chains, I dont hear a lot of complaining from the staff and they give you their full attention. (I've been through some checkouts where the workers are more concerned with arranging what they are going to do after work that night, then ringing up my groceries.)
