I started a Computer Science degree in Cardiff, and lasted almost one year. The basic problem I, and a lot of other people doing the course had, was that none of the staff there cared much about the students. Most of the lectures consisted of the lecturer giving us a page number in the course text. In one of the modules, we had to resort to buying teach yourself books because we weren't being taught by the lecturers. There seemed to be a get them in, get them out attitude to the whole thing. To illustrate, we were assigned personal tutors, but I never got to meet mine as he never turned up to the tutorials. That aside, I was impressed with the accommodation and the facilities provided on site. The students union was also very good.

Advantages: Fantastic night life! Disadvantages: Halls may be a long walk from the uni.
I am currently in my third year at Cardiff University, and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anybody. I am studying for an LLB in law and french, and since joining Cardiff university in 1998 I have not looked back. The only apparent disadvantage is that many halls of residence are a long walk from the university and the town. However, all of the halls have their own fantastic atmosphere, and there is always a free bus running to and from the ... ...life in Cardiff is second to none, the people are really friendly- 40 percent of the town's population are students. I am currently in France as part of the university erasmus scheme. This is very interesting and well organised from the point of view of Law, and all of the French towns available to study in are lovely. However, there is some lack of organisation on the part of the French department. Overall though, having visited most university ...

Advantages: Teaching standards, the location, and the union Disadvantages: Unhelpful adminstrative staff and clique students
Cardiff Uni has a good reputation, and with good cause. The standards of research and teaching are high. It's a good university. That is, until you have a problem. If you're a bit disorganised (like me) and don't write everything down (like you tutor group number for example), it is stressful and frustrating finding out who to even ask about it, and when you do find the relevant person, chances are they will be rude and condescending. Administrative ... ...money sources) and don't generally want to deal with us.
The students tend to get into cliques very quickly and making friends if you live outside halls is near impossible. (as a cardiff student, I have more friends at Swansea uni). A fair proportion of students are very hard working but snobby with it.
The lecturers ar generally very good - particularly in the outstanding psychology department. They are generally very helpful with academic stuff ...

Advantages: Good Atmosphere and teaching standards. Within easy reach of the town centre Disadvantages: Difficult to make friends if you don't live on campus
After three years of studying, I graduated from Cardiff University with a degree in Journalism, Film and Broadcasting last Summer. I chose Cardiff on the basic premise of it being absurdly close to where I live, but this had many drawbacks as I found it much more difficult to make friends and interact with the other students whilst I still lived at home. The School of Journalism that my studies were based within was extremely relaxed and has many ... ...only drawbacks were the attitudes of a good proportion of the administrative staff there who were often very unpleasant and the fact that I was not even made aware of who my personal tutor was during the three years I spent there. The area itself though is excellent, with the campus being large but not so big that you continuously find yourself getting lost upon first arriving there. The Student Union plays host to concerts by many top bands and ...

Advantages: illustrious alumni Disadvantages: they're patronising, dull and expensive
Well if the interview is representative of what this place is like, I'd say just don't go there. I was attending an interview day for their postgrad journalism course. Just let's say that if I want to be patronised that much I'll try and get into the Met Bar in my jogging bottoms. I, personally, don't see any reason why I should be humbly grateful to be asked along to meet the great and the good of their esteemed institution - but they certainly ... ...would have problems in a career in journalism because that's not what my daddy did. Ah well. This is not sour grapes because they didn't offer me a place - they did, well, on their reserve list to be precise. But having checked out the alternatives too, there's no way in hades I'd give them several thousand of my pounds. ...

Advantages: Own bus and nightclub. Cheap beer and excellent education. Disadvantages: Can't think of one
University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC) has been a university since 1998. It was formerly known as Cardiff Institute of Higher Education, Llandaff Technical College and years before that it was the college for Mariners.
UWIC quickly gained an award for excellence.
UWIC has four sites across the city. Each campus has many different schools.
Colchester Avenue- Catering and Hospitality.
Howard Gardens- Art.
Cyncoed- Teaching and Sport.
Llandaff- Sciences, IT, Business, Design Technology, Art, Horticulture.
There are about 10,000 students at UWIC across the four sites.
UWIC has an active Students' Union which has its own bus service, bars and even has an interest in a night club in the city centre called Reds.
Although UWIC already has an adequate provision of halls, 2005 will see the opening of brand new student ...
Advantages: Offers sandwich degree, broad range of modules offered, very good labs Disadvantages: Youe friends have all graduated when you come back from a sandwich year (but you do make new ones!)
In 1998 I graduated from Cardiff with a 2:1 in Genetics (one of the degrees offered in the department of biological sciences). One of the best aspects of the course at Cardiff is that it is extremely broad with a wide range of modules such that you can mix Genetics with microbiology, physiology, neurobiology etc, throughout the duration of the course. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how much you enjoy the subject) hardly any immunology was offered when I was there, although this may have changed now since the department has merged with another. The teaching at cardiff is excellent and meetings with personal tutors frequent to ensure that everything is OK.
The course also offers the opportunity to incorporate a sandwich year into your degree, providing you can secure a placement from those on offer or through your own ...
I have been a student at the University Of Wales, cardiff since September 2000, and I think the place is excellent. The course I am studying, Business Administration, has proved to be agood choice, although my mid-year exam results were quite literally nothing to write home about (my Dad would kill me!), but the mainly the student lifestyle at Cardiff is great.
We are repeatedly being told that we are so lucky to have the biggest and the best Student Union in the country. Quite how they measured it to be the best I don't know, but I won't argue.
The nightclub, Solus can hold nearly 2000 people, and is sold out in advance at least twice a week (usually on a friday and wednesday). The pub, The Tafarn (pun on the Rive Taff), is, so we are also told, the largest pint-selling bar in the country, and it is busy every day of the week. We ...
