Advantages Advantages Peaceful, good academic support

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can be quiet, far from the big shopping areas

You have never experienced a University like Lampeter, I can guarantee it. as you drive through the green hills of mid-wales towards the small town of Lampeter, you realise why. Lampeter is the smallest University in Europe, and its student population is just 1500. The campus is about a mile square at the most. The University specialises in Humanities and Classics, and has among the highest ratings in the UK for some of its subjects. Its intimate, but not stuffy atmosphere means that students get all the academic and personal support they increasingly need. Lampeter's facilities are also very ... more

Advantages Advantages Beautiful place. Can walk everywhere in town/campus. Child friendly. Quite cheap. Good societies.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Isolated and wet. Very small. Poor costly transport. Limited entertainment. Bad management.

I studied for my degree at Lampeter and I also worked at the University for a time, so perhaps can give quite a balanced opinion of what is on offer. So where is it and what is it like? Lampeter is in Mid West Wales, close to beaches, scenic walks, cycle paths and red kite feeding areas. It truly is a beautiful place, but can be quite isolated. It should also be noted that it is one of the wettest places in Europe. The campus itself is very small with virtually all you need within a five minute walk of everything else. Transport can be quite patchy: there is no train station (but you can walk ... more

Advantages Advantages something to tell your grandchild about

Disadvantages Disadvantages 25 miles from the nearest M&S

I was at Lampeter from 1989 to 1991 and had a wonderful time. Whilst a lot of the students find their way through clearing I was one of the ones who actually wanted to go. To give you some background: Lampeter is a very small univeristy in a very small west Wales market town. The university was founded in 1822, which makes it the oldest in English and Wales not counting Oxbridge. It is very much a Humanities place with good depts or History, Georgraphy, and Archaeology to name but a few. The town has about 5000 people in it, of which maybe 1500 are at the university. The place is small ... more

    Advantages Advantages Cheap and beautiful.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages No train station!

There are usually one of three reactions when you tell people that you went to Lampeter. The first is a look of bewilderment that means they've never heard of it. The second is a look of disdain, as if you weren't clever enough to go anywhere else and you had to resort to the clearing process. And the third is lewd jokes about sheep. But I have very fond memories of my time at Lampeter, and so has everyone else I have met who studied there (and yes, it *is* amazing how many people you meet who have actually been there). It is a tiny university tucked away in a very agreeable part of West Wales ... more
