Quavers - made by major snack food gurus and Gary Lineker loving giants Walkers, is just one of their many popular brands of crisps that they have had launched. According to the Walkers website, Quavers is their best selling snack that the company has to offer, and has been a firm favourite for over 30 years. Now judging from the many products that Walkers has produced over the time they have been in production, this is quite some feat for these little cheesy 'waves'. After all, the company, that is said to have had it's humble beginnings in 1948 has quite a collection of well known and tasty crisps sold today, ranging from the original Walkers and it's numerous flavours, the Sensations line 'the so called 'posh' crisps that have had former party girl Tara Palmer Tomkinson as well as Victoria Beckham advertising them, children's favourite Monster Munch, Doritos and Wotsits. Perhaps Quavers just has that little something extra.

~ HISTORY ~...

The Walkers company was founded by a real Mr Walker - A Mr Henry Walker to be exact. Originally Henry was a pork butcher in the 1880's, but moved from Mansfield to Leicester to take control of a high street business. This ran fairly smoothly until the second world war raged, rationing meat. His number of shops continually sold out early in the day and he needed to do something to deal with this mass shortage. So he soon came upon potato crisp snacks, after considering ice-cream as a choice, but disregarding it after hygeine issues came up. From then on, The Walkers phenomenon grew, and Henry Walker's business became very well established.

~ THE CRISP ~...

Now the crisp itself is packaged in a bright eye-catching yellow colour with the word Quavers written in green in the centre of the packet. The word seems to sit on bubbles and has them floating up to the top, probably representing the light bubbly texture and taste of the snack. Under this is a note that tells us that they are under 100 calaries. This has been a fairly recent change I'd say, that would definitelly agree with dieters, highlighting the fact more that they want to be known as 'the light potato snack', the words clearly on the packet to show this.
Upon opening a packet, you're greeted with a gorgeous cheesy smell, not totally overpowering, but pleasant, and never puts me off from delving in. Inside is a small amount of light orangey coloured wavy shapes. The crisp itself feels very light as does the packet, but this is because these crisps are filled with tiny little air bubbles that give their light feel, and also gives the illusion you're not really eating much, as it weighs very little. And at I think about 20 grams a packet it also makes you feel like you're not really getting value for money. I actually feel pretty annoyed whenever I buy these; not to the point that I'd send them back to the factory to have them shovel some more in there, but just a little miffed really as they're quite tasty and very moreish. Perhaps it's got something to do with their lightness, but other Walkers crisps and generally other crisp types made by other manafacturers I've tried have this factor about them too. One of the frequently asked questions on the website is why are the packets much larger compared to the amount of contents inside, and they claim that they need to make consumers have as much as possible, and they produce air filled packaging to prevent breakage of crisps inside, so I suppose they need to provide a safe standard amount before they'd be the possibility of too many broken crisps and I'm assuming a huge level of complaints. A good answer really and pretty clever too, especiaily in relation to Quavers. That would mean, as they are so moreish, that more poeple would stock up on em'. Increased sales of multi-packs I'm sure. With this crisp, and it's sorry amount of contents, combined with their lovely taste, is just going to make you want some more.

When you bite into one of these babies, you can instanty taste the cheese and the potato taste, although they are made with potato starch and a cheese flavour. This mingles in your mouth and because they are so light after you've crunched your teeth into the the quaver it melts quickly and dissolves, making it pretty easy to swallow. In fact if you let it sit on your tongue, the warmth make the bubbles slowly pop, and you can hear it sizzle as if it were in a frying pan. All in all a yummy taste, an all too quick experience though. You very often feel, well I certainly do, not very filled up, and craving just a few more bites to satisfy my hunger. With just a few handfuls they're gone from the packet, and you're left feeling quite glum and wishing you had magic powers to fill the bare inside of the foil up again. This time to the top! But alas it can't be.

~ SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE ~...

Like I said the crisps themselves are light so would be a particularly healthy snack for young children to have in lunch boxes and in general for most people to consume. Dieters could also eat them knowing they're not eating too much of a bad thing. Certainly there is the disadvantage that because the snack can be so tasty you're likely to eat more than one packet and easily have two or three in a day. The back of the packet tells us that 'Everyone knows Walkers make the most irresistible crisps' and I feel this statement may be true.
So suitable for most people, approved for vegetarians; but just a warning, as these crisps include wheat flour, those intolerant to this should avoid these.

~ NUTRITIONAL DETAILS ~...

Into some of the nutritional details, the back of the packet in a values table tells us that a single pack contains 84 calaries, 8.4 grams of fat, and 10.0g of carbohydrates. All in all a fairly healthy snack I'd say. Course it all adds up. You'd be obviously doubling those figures if you consumed more than one packet so keep this in mind.

~ A BIT OF THIS, A BIT OF THAT ~...

As mentioned before the main ingredients are potato starch and cheese flavour, it's also intersting to know that paprika and pepper are added to give a bit of extra zing to the overall taste, and produce more a of warm colour to the quavers as paprika does for Wotsits.

~ PRICE AND AVAILABILITY ~...

Quavers crisps come in single packets that normally are in a price range of between 30 and 40p, and multi-packs of ten that are usually over a pound, or if you're lucky just under, though I've never seen this yet. They also come in two other flavours. Prawn Cocktail like Wotsits now come in, and Salt and Vinegar, which I'm not too overly keen on.

You can get Quavers pretty much everywhere in the UK. They're in most supermarket stores such as Asda and Sainsbury's and should be available in small local shops too. They're also getting sold internationally online on American snack food sites.

~ IN CONCLUSION ~...

So all in all Quavers are a great crisp. One of the best actually, and one of the Walkers bunch that most definitely stands out from the crowd. I don't actually eat these all that much. Just on the occasion, when I feel like some. I'm varied when it comes to crisp tastes, and to be honest, I have sweet and savoury phases, and could go without crisps for months. But they are still enjoyed by me whenever I have a try of them, and many other people I know, and despite their minor drawbacks are something to be savoured.
Walkers are surely doing everything right with this brand. May they continue doing so I hope. And with the company having an estimated 11 million people giving in to a Walkers snack food ever day I'd say they are having no trouble with success.

So - to quave or not to quave, that is the question...I say yes - quave away! Though if I were you I'd buy more than one packet when you have the urge!
