I spotted these Cornetto Enigma chocolate and caramel cones on offer in Sainsburys at the weekend, after trying and absolutely loving the new chocolate and caramel Magnum Infinitys recently I thought that I'd also give these Cornetto Enigmas a go. These were on offer at half price, reduced from £2.99 to £1.49 for a box of 4, a bargain as each one worked out at just 37.5 pence.

I had absolutely adored the chocolate and caramel Magmum Infinitys and I also expected to love these as they are the same flavour - chocolate and caramel. However I didn't really like these, in fact I thought that they were actually really dissapointing. They are lower in calories that the Magnums, the Cornettos are just 180 kcal per Cornetto, compared to 270 kcal per Magnum, however even this couldn't redeem them for me, the saving of essentially 100 kcal per ice cream.

So, on to the taste. These Cornettos are filled with chocolate ice cream which gives way to a caramel centre filled with chocolate bits. The chocolate ice cream is topped with small chocolate and nut pieces, and a chocolate flavour topping. The chocolate ice cream was a bit too sweet and synthetic tasting for my liking. The caramel centre which ran down the middle of the wafer cone was far too sweet and sickly, and I also thought that there was far too much caramel compared to the amount of ice cream. The chocolate 'flavour' topping was exactly that - a chocolate 'flavour' topping, it reminded me of that chocolate sauce that you squeeze on ice cream that then hardens.

Overall I found the Cornettos to be far too sweet and sickly, and far too synthetic tasting. The final nail in the coffin for these Cornettos was that the chocolate chunk at the bottom of the Cornetto wafer cones melted and leaked out all over me, as the bottom of the Cornetto wafer cones was not sealed or joined.

I wouldn't buy these again, even if they were on offer. The supermarkets always have some sort of ice cream bars on offer all of the time, and I think that there are much nicer ice creams bars out there and I would definately choose something else over these. And if I was after a chocolate and caramel taste specifically I would choose the chocolate and caramel Magnum Infinitys every single time.

Oddly enough we like these - but find caramel far too sickly in ice cream. R.
