Action-packed, highly charged war movie.
Review of Windtalkers DVD by Antnic78

Advantages: Action-packed war movie.
Disadvantages: Limited storyline.

When John Woo has a go at directing a film set during the second world war you can bet it will be packed with action from start to finish, and low and behold this film has exactly that. The story follows the efforts of marines who's mission it is to protect Navjo Indians recruited into the war to use military code based on the Navajo language. The marines protect the code by protecting the man and the story therefore allows for selfless feats of ...
...Nicolas Cage. Don't expect any anti-war messages here but do expect to be thrilled by some great battle scenes with slow motion sequences that have become a trademark in John Woo movies. The story is not particularly strong nor do I expect it was intended to be, but the action makes up for any shortcomings in the plot. The action is very well choreographed and exciting and fans of action films will find this film very enjoyable. When I watched the ... Read review

"We'll start the war from right here!"
Review of The Longest Day (Wide Screen) by alexdg1

Advantages: Only major film to attempt to capture the scope and drama of D-Day
Disadvantages: None

In 1959, 15 years after the Allied invasion of Normandy, former London-based war correspondent Cornelius Ryan wrote The Longest Day, his popular and critically-acclaimed account of the D-Day landings. Based on painstaking research and interviews with Allied and German veterans and the French civilians swept up in the events of June 6, 1944, The Longest Day remains among the best books on the topic. It is not surprising, then, that 20th Century-Fox ...
...also written plays) to adapt The Longest Day into a screenplay for a major motion picture. Zanuck, who had served in the Army Signal Corps as a lieutenant colonel and helped document the D-Day landings, had always wanted to make a feature film about the invasion. He also had another pressing reason to make what he thought would be a big hit: 20th Century-Fox, nearly crippled by box office flops and the costly production of Cleopatra, was on the brink ... We'll fight them on the beaches
Review of The Longest Day (Wide Screen) (Special Edition) by Teach2301

Advantages: Own a classic, epic war movie
Disadvantages: Special features aren't that special

The Longest Day - an epic and a classic war movie now on DVD with a special feature DVD. It is a wide screen version and worth being played on a wide screen/ large TV. I have a projector and its great to set up the home cinema, surround sound (although its not Dolby), set up the projector and sit down with a few beers. I like this film, when I first saw it back in the 1980's as a young boy; it sent my imagination running - poor old action man. The ...
...little humour from the Directors -Ken Annakin - (I wonder if George Lucas watched the credits and came up with the idea of Anakin Skywalker from the director's name), Andrew Marton and Bernhard Wicki. I'll do a quick synopsis and then review the package as a whole. Then I'll give a bit more detail below. Quick synopsis: The Longest Day refers to the allied invasion of occupied France on 6th June 1944 - D Day. We follow the paths of numerous actors ... Read review

bargain basement historic tales
Review of Flags Of Our Fathers/Letters From Iwo Jima - Battle For Iwo Jima Collection (Collector's Edition) by AgeUK

Advantages: Very moving, violent, yet accurate
Disadvantages: see above

Flags of our fathers A film Directed by Clint Eastwood, which retells the story of 6 men who erected the stars and stripes on top of a mountain at Iowa Jima. They were dubbed hereos, but in truth, these men in the picture were raising a second flag, the first time it was raised it was done by different men not in front of a camera. It was only the 5th day in the battle which would rage for another 35. The three surviving men from the group of six, ...
...forth in time, through the battle, after (when they were taken back to the US on a "buy war bonds" drive) and even later in the present time when the story is being re-told. The point that the real hereos are the ones who gave their lives and were left behind on the island is made clear and done well. Its a good film with plenty of action, some quite violent, but also an underlying torrent of heroism and honour. Its good stuff. Two thumbs up. letters ... Read review
