I've played my fair share of MMOs, and I know how hard it can be for developers to make a game that everyone likes. I don't think that will ever happen. I did feel, however, that Mythic Entertainment tried to make this game enjoyable for almost everyone, be it experienced gamer or not. Whether they succeeded? To a degree...

From the very beginning, the game is nice to look at - the character models are well rendered and there's plenty of variation to be had with individual characters, even if it's a little subtle some times. You choose between playing on the side of Order or Destruction, with twelve different careers to choose from on either side. This sounds like a lot, but I felt a little limited with only four career choices per race. You can earn points later to specialize in certain areas, but don't expect to see any of that until much later on in the game.

Once you're dropped into the game itself, there's a good amount of hand-holding to help you through the first ten levels or so. I won't compare this game to World of Warcraft, if only because I know it's been done far more often than anyone could ever wish for, but I will say that if you've played WoW, you'll find that some things like navigation and quest progression will feel awfully familiar. That's not to say it hasn't been improved upon, just that it's more of the same. The only things that do seem vastly different from any other game were the so called 'Public Quests', an area where you're encouraged to work together with other players to achieve a goal, whether you are in a party with them or not. They can be fun, but once I'd seen a few, I felt I'd seen them all.

Player versus player content was nicely done, and though it didn't always feel balanced there was still a satisfying reward for both the winning and losing side. I've never really enjoyed any PvP content in any game, to the degree of avoiding it like the plague, but WAR had me joining Realm versus Realm almost as often as I could. Especially with friends, I'd be in those queues like no tomorrow.

Sadly, without friends, you aren't bound to enjoy this game for a very long time. I managed to get to level (or rank, as they call it) 20 before my friends got bored with the game at even lower levels, and even with the Public Quests it didn't seem worth it going alone. Soloable content seemed to take a dive around level 30, and if you haven't got a static group then you had better prepare to group up with strangers. And though I ran into a few literate and nice ones, they appeared far and few between.

I enjoyed my time in this game, but I doubt I will ever return to it. It's a good game in a great, immersive world, but a great game it is not.
