Warrior Yoga Mat

Warrior Yoga Mat

It has been almost three years now that I decided to make what has been one of the best and most life changing decisions in my life. Due to ill health I needed a gentle and doable form of exercise that actually worked and most importantly - that I could enjoy! Indeed I wanted something that I would look forward to and not dread, or undertake as a chore. Hatha Yoga was at the forefront of my mind and this was because it seemed to provide good results physically by toning the body and creating stamina - but also worked on breathing techniques. I commenced practice and within a period of two weeks I noticed all manner of changes taking place not least to mention an inner calmness which is what ultimately made up my mind that a Yoga practice was going to be lifelong. Physically over the time that I have been practicing my body muscle is longer and leaner and toned and I have strength, I have more endurance and stamina and my breathing is now as it should be - calm and deep, not rapid and in the upper chest. The meditation techniques are beautiful and effective for me - I am just so ready for the day when I have done my morning practice and I am so happy that I discovered it. My practice is Kundalini Yoga now which I have been doing regularly for approximately two years - initially I alternated between my Hatha and Kundalini but on the days that I did Hatha I found myself longing for the Kundalini practice so I followed my intuition and have never looked back. I am glad that I practiced Hatha first though as it is such a beautiful practice and taught me alignement and correct posture etc before I commenced the Kundalini and this was a good thing as I knew how to practice safely from the start.

Because of the nature of Yoga postures, some of which require a stable foundation coming from feet or hands or both - it is important to have a good surface to work on. A Yoga mat is an investment in your safe practice and not only provides a safe surface but also a cushioned one for comfort and protection of joints during particular asana's ( postures ) or for example a set of linked movements called Sun Salutations. Also some asana's involve kneeling or sitting cross legged and it is much more comfortable on a bit of padding. If you are to attend a Yoga Class and it is in a Hall or large room then you will appreciate the added bit of warmth that a good mat will provide too - it makes a difference and of course you need to be relaxed and comfortable to practice Yoga - not tense as this compromises the postures.

Initially I had purchased a mat which was a good brand and provided adequate cushioning and at first good grip - sticky mat quality - but after only 10 months of daily use the mat started to become 'slippy' which is not a good quality for a Yoga Mat. I did clean it and tried it again only to slip and side during my practice - at that point it became very clear to me that I needed to invest in a quality product that would provide a secure footing when in the Down Dog for example or Warrior - these asana's requre a good foundation which is provided by the feet and hands for Down Dog and the feet for the Warrior. And so research commenced.

Sticky grip that lasted
Adequate cushioning for comfort
Competitive price

I had not long to do my research as it soon became very clear to me which mat was suited to me for my practice of initially Hatha and now Kundalini - which though does not encompass as many standing asana's does include some Down Dog, Salutations, Warrior and many other standing postures that require stability. That mat was the Yoga Mad Warrior Mat and I was drawn to it over and over again because of the fact that it is manufactured by a reputable and quality brand and one of the main selling points was the grip provided by the mat - this is so important.

Yoga Mad Warrior Yoga Mat! I have had this mat approximately 2 years now and it is providing me with the same stability and comfort as when I purchased it - now that is what I call a good product as I use it every day!

The mat comes packaged in simple but attractive and minimal wrapping, on opening up the mat I could smell the newness which was a pleasant fragrance that smelt clean and not a yukky rubbery one - a pleasant surprise and the same fragrance is noticable today two years on! The colour is dark blue and has not faded in any way. The texture is small bumps - which are flat and really comfortable and contribute to the grip.

This mat provides excellent grip and is somewhat 'sticky' so that your feet and hands are kept in place and do not slide forward as you perspire. As I have mentioned, I have been practicing daily for two years on this mat and the grip is still effective.

At 4mm thick the mat is great for providing a comfy cushioning - practice is wonderful on this surface! Knees, ankles, spine, head - all protected and cushioned. When relaxing on your back in Savasana (Corpse Pose) it is so nice on this mat - up to 20 minutes or more with all pressure areas protected. The mat is 6ft long which is another great feature for us tall girls - when doing supine work head and feet are on the mat!

Although I mention the benefits of this mat being lovely and cushioned it is still thin enough to provide a surface that is secure for balancing postures, I find it to be a good all rounder.

This mat is fully machine washable - not all mats are - so this will prolong the mat life even more!

The mats are tested AZO and DOP free by SGS labs.

There are a choice of colours to choose from, I have a dark blue one so that marks don't show up on it. You can choose from:

Price approximately £17.00 from www.yogamad.com I got mine for slightly less from an eBay seller, shop around and you may get for less but to be honest the price at Yoga Mad is well worth it for a safe and cushioned surface that lasts!

I have been using this mat for approximately two years now and I am very impressed with it. All of the features that are advertised are true in my experience. The mat offers a good grip that has lasted and still going strong. The mat provides great cushioning and it is washable in a machine!

I have practiced Hatha yoga and Kundalini Yoga on this mat and have done postures that require a stable foundation - this mat has prevented any slipping or sliding and I have enjoyed doing Sun Salutations too without any accidents caused by slipping. I can undertake my practice without hestition because I can trust the mat to support me and keep me safe.

The mat is very high quality, well made, rolls up easily, stays clean and is attractive in blue. It looks professional and is not fussy - it is there to do a job and it does it very very well.

A reliable and quality Yoga mat at a good price that I have no hesitation to recommend to others.
