Arriving at my hotel in Germany quite late in the evening and too tired to hunt down any particular beer, I sauntered along to the hotel bar and casually perused the choices on offer. Who am I kidding? It had been a long dry day and I was absolutely gagging. I was spitting feathers. In short, I had a drouth on me that would make a camel blush.
I was thirsty!

On tap in the bar was Warsteiner Premium Verum. That being the case, I said to the barman, "One very large, chillingly cold, decidedly wet and refreshingly refreshing glass of your finest ale, my good man, if you please."
To which he replied, "Bitte?"
"If you have any bitter, great." I said. "But I'll settle for a pilsner."
"Ah, you are English" he said, suicidally.
But that's another story......

--------
THE POUR
--------

Warsteiner pours to a very pale, crystal clear, golden colour with ascending bubbles and a frothy, creamy, though short-lived, white head. The head collapsed VERY quickly. There’s a noticable maltiness in the aroma but also a subtle hint of hops with sweet, grainy aromas following through and a little yeastiness to it. The scent is robust but not overwhelming. There is good carbonation although less evident, I think, than other pilsners. I also thought that it had a paler colour and fainter hop aroma than most German Pilsners.

---------
THE TASTE
---------

Medium-bodied, the taste is balanced - not too sweet and not too bitter. One of the things I liked about this beer was the presence of hops throughout. It's light and biscuity, crisp and refreshing but lacking in any real intensity. It has a smooth and enjoyable flavour but doesn't really have a big kick to it.
It's very slightly dry and bitter in the finish but there is little or no aftertaste.

-----------
THE VERDICT
-----------

At 4.8% ABV, it drinks very easily, and is satisfying without giving the tastebuds too vigorous a work-out. Although not the most interesting beer I’ve ever tasted, it’s certainly worth drinking and I would pick it over many others of a similar style. Put it this way, I wouldn't empty a glass of this beer to replace it with a Rolling Rock!

A very drinkable and pleasant beer. Not the most complex of brews but it's crisp and refreshing. This beer is a great thirst quencher and is ideal for a sunny afternoon or perhaps to wash down a little wurstchen und brotchen.

Thanks for reading,

PROST!
