nuclear clock stands at five minutes to midnight. This stunning graphic novel chronicles the fall from grace of a group of super heroes plagued by all too human failings. The concept of the super hero is dissected and inverted as strangely realistic characters are stalked by an unknown assassin. Originally published as a 12-issue series in 1986 and 1987 WATCHMEN remains one of DC Comics' most popular graphic novels. Seventh printing.
Advantages: Wonderful written and drawn. Disadvantages: £15

Advantages: Great Artwork, Story, Dialogue Disadvantages: Unfortunately a stand alone....no sequel.that i know of.
...friend recommended a book called Watchmen by Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons, in fact he was so enthused about the book, he lent me his prized copy. He knew that I liked to read in fact I got through about four or five books a week at the time but I had never tried a graphic novel.
“Just give it a chance”, he pleaded looking at my doubtful expression. So I took it home and opened the bright yellow cover to see a yellow smiley face badge with ... ...the first frame and set the high standard for the rest of the book. The artwork was superb, you could take almost any frame from this graphic novel, blow it up, frame it and hang it on your wall. In fact I would go so far as saying, it would be an enjoyable book if there were no words throughout the whole thing as it is visually attractive, professionally drawn and coloured making for a very polished finished. But then you have the added delight ...

Fearless Symmetry Review ofWatchmen - Alan Moore & Dave Gibbonsby

Advantages: A classic that works on all levels Disadvantages: Style can be a little difficult to read
Watchmen was recommended to me by a friend who had his hair cut into pointy horns and sported a very long, very dodgy goatee, I’m clearly mixing with the right people. Alan Moore’s “Watchmen” is probably about the most important comic ever released, it changed the way people view comics as an art form and as literature. I think it’s one of the few comics that actually deserve that awful 80’s term, Graphic Novel.
... ...certain styles and when that person is talking over another image it could confuse someone who isn’t used to this style of writing.
Watchmen is a very intelligent book worthy of the classic status it has gained, If you only read one comic in your life read this one. ...

Advantages: Smart deconstruction of comic book genre Disadvantages: Has been surpassed by Moore's later works
...the product. The art in Watchmen is really something to behold, even if the colouring looks a little dated by today's standard. Every panel is exquisitely planned, and every diny detail paid due attention to. Though 'Watchmen' is a parody of super-hero comics, David Gibbon's style is very atypical of the legacy that the book sends up. As opposed to the blow-up, kinetic art usually associated with comic books, Gibbons' style is very 'real-world' and ... ...of the book in taking extraordinary characters and placing them into reality, where people dressing up in costumes and fighting crime is not really the most healthy activity for someone to spend their free time on. 'Watchmen' works as starting point for people who are interested in comics to start mining the rich vein of quality work that exists out there. Even for those who do not 'get' all of the sly references to the comic industry's back catalogue ...

Advantages: Plot, Characterisation, Art Disadvantages: none
...worthy of being called such, Watchmen is, for my money, the greatest comic book ever published. (Although Kurt Busiek's Astro City comes close.) This book made it alright for adults to admit to liking comics, with its complex and engrossing story line and characterisations. The art by Dave Gibbons complements the script by Moore perfectly.
Taking a bunch of old Charlton Comics characters, Moore gives us a story that initially seems to be about a ... ...Alan Moore is probably the most lauded comicbook writer of recent times, and with good reason. Here he gives us heroes that act like real people would, with flaws and regrets. Unfortunately, any graphic novel that requires a reading age approaching double figures seems to be hailed as a classic these days, which means that the few which are genuinely intelligent can be lost in the throng. Whether you are a fan of superheroes or not, this is a gripping ...

Advantages: Beautifully written, attention to detail in story and art, a moving read of tremendous power Disadvantages: people may be put off by the fact its a comic, don't be.
...If you have never heard of Watchmen, prepare yourself for an introduction to a world of pure brain candy, you will go out and buy this and then personally thank me for bringing it to your attention.
So it's a comic. Do not let this put you off. It is a fine work of literature that trancends any boundaries set upon it by mere descriptions of genre. The Watchmen Graphic Novel collects the full series of Watchmen Comics by writer AlanMoore and artist DaveGibbons. It is not a comicbook for children, infact some of the content is quite strong and it is recommended for mature readers. It begins with the murder of an ex-costumed vigilante called the Comedian and is initially narrated by excerpts from a journal by another costumed fugitive - Rorscach (a torture, sad and amaged individual that rises above his past, but I dont want to spoil...
