Windows Software is fairly straightforward. Not so with Windows MediaCenter 2005. The Setup guide supplied with the software will provide you with various configurations for your HTPC, unfortunately, it will not give you any help with loading the software. It took me a number of days to get this installed on my system only to stumble across the information I needed to complete the installation by visiting a forum.
A note for anyone purchasing this software. Make sure that your system is fully compatible by visiting the Microsoft website otherwise you may find the software will not load.
When asked for the SP2 CD, re-insert MediaCenter Disc One as this is where it is located. Do not insert a seperate standalone Service Pack 2 CD or other copy of the software as this will not work and the software will not be installed.

Having spent some time looking for a good wireless media device, I came across the Linksys DMA2100. I was confident that with the Linksys the product would do the job.
Unfortunately it is totally unusable, firstly the software that came in the box states that it is Vista compatible; however I happened to run XP, after several attempts and hours of trying to load the operating software I was forced to call tech support. I have to say we have all had problems with so called tech support; trying to get through, long hours on premium rate numbers, speaking with overseas staff that do not understand English, but the Linksys so called back-up is non-existent, you cannot get through, and the rare times that you do, the support staff have not got a clue, keeping you on hold only to come back and give you yet another number to call that you are ...
Advantages: The media center interface, decent codec support, HD movies stream really well. Disadvantages: The DVD player is terrible.
Okay, the big pull of this DVD player is the built in MediaCenter Extender software, which once set up runs really well. You need to have vista installed on a PC (which needs to be on for it to work) and you also need a good network connection between the two. I have tried both a 200mbps powerline ethernet network and a wireless N network and for me the wireless network performed better for HD movies, but this will differ for most people so just make sure you arn't relying on a bog standard 54mbps wifi connection.
The built in DVD play is poor to say the least, it doesn't scale DVD's out to widescreen it simply takes the DVD's basic resolution and outputs it to the middle of the screen.
