The overall rating of a review is different from a simple average of all individual ratings.
Advantages:
Losing weight is easy and you don't have to give up your favourite foods, great support offered, lots of local meetings during the day and eveing
Disadvantages:
Weekly fee can make it an expensive way to lose weight
At the beginning of the year I was prescribed Xenical to help me lose weight, it did work but was very slow and the side effects were very nasty so I wasn’t disappointed when my GP temporarily took me off them when I went down with a nasty illness in the Summer.
However, whilst the side effects had gone there was still a downside – having stopped the tablets all the weight I had lost, and more, suddenly started to pile back on. Initially I ignored it but when all the new clothes I had bought got to the point of being too tight I decided I had to do something positive but something that didn’t involve going back on the Xenical.
I had often thought of joining Weight Watchers and it had been highly recommended to me by several people, however, as I’m not a fruit, salad or veg person I didn’t believe that any kind of “NORMAL” diet would work for me so I just put it off. In fact the only reason I stopped putting off giving it a go was because the free registration offer was about to end and I didn’t want to pay the £9.00 joining fee, £7.50 for people over 60.
Weight Watchers are a well known organization and in order to find out further information about them and how they worked I logged onto their website, www.weightwatchers.co.uk.
The website is very informative and has a facility which will help you to find your nearest meeting by simply typing in your postcode.
On my first visit I was very nervous, especially as the majority of people in the queue didn’t even look like they needed to lose weight – I felt as though I stuck out like a sore thumb, however, once inside the room I discovered that whilst there were a lot of thin people, there were also larger members, and the majority of those who are nice and slim are really good role models as they were all larger at some point.
When I arrived I was taken to the new members table where I had to fill in a registration agreement
and I was then given a membership card, introduced to my leader and then weighed.
I have no intention of telling you what I weighed – however, I will tell you that I was horrified – I now weighed more than I had before I started the original Xenical diet and knew that I had to make Weight Watchers work for me no matter what it took.
The meetings are all typically the same, they run for an hour, with the first half hour being weigh in time, this is where you are weighed, (discreetly – nobody else will know your weight), during this time you can also raise any concerns you may have with your leader, the second half hour usually consists of the leader offering general advice and tips, listening to other members sharing their experiences and generally offering each other support if and when required. At the beginning of the talk, new members are introduced to the group and there is an opportunity to show off if you are happy with your weight loss, by telling the rest of the group how much weight you have lost that week, or if you are disappointed because your weight loss has been minimal or non existent there is an opportunity to seek advice or support from the other members.
At each meeting you are given a leaflet which offers advice and sometimes recipes – once a month you get a booklet and this booklet generally lists advice along with low point seasonal recipes using seasonal fruit/veg.
At the end of the first meeting the leader asks the new members to stay behind so that she can introduce them to the Weight Watchers “Time To Eat” diet and answer any questions they may have. At this point you are also given a Weight Watchers handbag which contains lots of useful information about how the diet works, a points calculator which is useful to take with you on shopping trips and a handbook which lists the points values of most general foods. The contents of the handbag are invaluable as they really do help to answer any questions you have forgotten to ask and will help to steer you in the right direction. You will also be given your leaders telephone number and if you have any questions you can contact her at any time to discuss your worries.
When I got home after the first meeting I spent about an hour reading through all the literature familiarizing myself with the points system and working out how many points I could have each day and what kind of meals I could eat.
For those of you who don’t know – Weight Watchers is based on a point system – each food and drink item has a points value and you have to calculate all your points throughout the day to ensure that you stick to the points you allowed.
The amount of points you are allowed depends on your current weight – the more you weigh the more points you can have, gradually as you lose weight you will move down to the next points level and gradually you will reduce your points.
If you are only slightly overweight you will probably be on the minimum amount of points that you can have per day, this is 18 points and whilst it may not sound a lot, if you spend your points wisely you will be surprised at just how much you can eat.
As well as the points you are allocated based on your weight, there is also the opportunity to earn additional points by exercising – a 15 brisk walk will earn you 1 ½ points – you can also opt to carry over any left over points to use on another day, or spread them over a few days. However, you can only carry over or earn a maximum of 12 points per week.
The day after I joined Weight Watchers I went shopping at my local Asda store and took my Weight Watchers calculator with me – I found this really useful as by simply looking up the calories and amount of saturated fat within the product I was able to calculate the points value. It did take me longer to do my shopping, but I shopped wisely and made sure that I only purchased products that I could eat without going mad on the points, for example, I could have bought a pack of four fat sausages that worked out at 3 points per sausage, or chosen thin sausages at only 1.5 points per sausage – it is definitely well worth checking out the points values when you are shopping or you could end up buying something and only being able to eat that one item as the points value is so high that you have no points left over to eat anything else with it.
Each week you are given a tracker and it is well worth using it and making sure that you write down everything that you eat and drink during the day, remember that milk has a points value so even cups of tea need to be written down. I tend to measure out my milk for the day and calculate the points accordingly. It is worth noting that 1 pint of full fat milk uses up 8 points, a pint of semi skimmed milk uses up 4 points and a pint of skimmed milk only uses up 2 points. I don’t mind skimmed milk in tea or coffee so I have half a pint of skimmed milk for drinks and ¼ pint of semi skimmed milk for my cereal – hence saving 1 point overall than if I had all semi skimmed milk.
I am currently on 22 points per day and for those points I can typically eat the following.
**BREAKFAST**
30g of Rice Krispies 1 ½ points ¼ pint semi skimmed milk 1 point
**LUNCH**
2 Slices of white Hovis bread 3 points 100g of wafer thin ham 1 point 1 teaspoon low fat spread ½ point
Leaving 5 points left over for another day – or I could have a Crunchie for 3 ½ points or a 100g glass of white wine for 1 point, etc.
Please note that the above is simply a rough guide and should not be read as anything other than that.
As you can see from the brief typical daily menu there is plenty to eat and you won’t be starved – however, you will probably find that you do get very hungry during the first week as you will have been used to eating a lot more, this feeling soon subsides and I found that filling up on a drink helped.
The great thing about Weight Watchers is that you can really eat what you like as long as you stick to your points so you don’t have to give up all your favourite foods and you can still find room for the odd chocolate bar, take away or bag of crisps within your points but still lose weight successfully.
At the end of my first week I was delighted to have lost 5 ½ lbs. I have now been attending for 10 weeks and during that time I have lost 17 ½ lbs – I haven’t felt deprived and have even managed to eat a few KFC meals and still keep within the points.
The average weekly weight loss is 1 – 2lb per week so in a relatively short time you can lose a substantial amount of weight.
At the Weight Watchers meeting there is a table where you can purchase Weight Watchers items such as sweets, snack bars, electronic food weighing scales, the Weight Watchers magazine, a shopping guide which lists all major high street and brand named foods along with their points values, and an eating out guide which lists most major pubs and restaurants as well as cafes and take away restaurants, the guide details a selection of the most popular dishes and their points values. I would strongly advise buying both the shopping guide and the eating out guide as I have found them invaluable. The total price for them both is £5.50 but it is slightly more if you buy them individually.
Each meeting costs £4.75 and this fee is payable for up to two weeks even if you don’t attend.
You don’t have to stay to the meetings, you can just go along and get weighed and go straight home – I always stay to the meetings to get the most value for my money and to gain helpful tips that other members may have to offer.
Meetings are held in most towns and villages and there are generally meetings both in the evenings and during the day.
For further information check out the Weight Watchers website at www.weightwatchers.co.uk .
I have been delighted with my progress – I haven’t felt like I have had to go without – I can still enjoy all my favourite foods, eat out and still lose weight.
At your first meeting you will decide with your leader how much weight you want to lose and if you are not sure then the leader will usually suggest that you make your first target 10% of your current weight – you are rewarded with a special 10% keyring when you achieve this.
You decide how much weight you want to lose and there is absolutely no pressure on you to achieve a certain amount – you diet at your own pace and lose as much or as little as you wish.
Weight Watchers will only accept members who need to lose 10lb or more based on the standard Body Mass Index regulations.
If you decide to continue with Weight Watchers until you hit the weight that you should be for your height and build then you will be rewarded with gold membership – you get a gold keyring and lifelong free membership to Weight Watchers, (certain conditions apply for you to continue to receive the free lifelong membership).
If you want to lose weight safely, relatively quickly and enjoyably then I would highly recommend that you join Weight Watchers. Look out for the special offer that usually crops up several times a year, especially just after Christmas, registration is offered free, saving you £9.00 or £7.50 if you are over 60.
If you don’t feel that you can attend a meeting because you are too busy or housebound etc, you can join the “Time to Eat” At Home program which is managed over the internet, details of this option can be found on the Weight Watchers website.
