Weis and Hickman's new fantasy novel, The Well of Darkness, the first in the Sovereign ... more
Stone sequence, is far darker than we are used to from these authors. Hidden among the four elements and their magic is the Void and the dark, death-orientated magic that is its own; among the court of wise King Tamaros and his pious son Helmos there sits ambitious younger son Dagnarus and his hopelessly loyal former whipping boy Gareth. As a boy of 10, Dagnarus sets his future by asking Gareth to study Void magic for him; he intends to be king, and nothing will be allowed to stand in his way--not father, not brother, not the magic-soaked paladins who control the Portals that connect the human realms with those of the proud violent elves, the sullen horse-riding dwarves and the omen-fearing sardonic orks of the sea... This is an enjoyably bleak read--Gareth, driven to the worst of evils by his admiration for his prince yet retaining sparks of conscience, and some of our sympathy, even at his most atrocious, is a memorable creation, and Helmos, a man so dominated by conscience and self-regarding honour as to be weak, is hardly less so. --Roz Kaveney

Advantages: a very different book, a bit hard to put down Disadvantages: the language is very simple, not as rich as other works
The Darksword trilogy is a very interesting piece of work.
Margret Weiss & TracyHickman take a fresh approach to a classical fantasy book, the ordinary person in this world is a magician.
This approach allows a different kind of tale to evolve, the queen's
son and heir to the throne, is born, but is found to be without magic.
He is sentenced to death, but is mysteriously smuggled out to a village with a woman pretending to be his mother.
The trilogy follows this child's life, an ordinary person in a magical world, Combined with fascinating characters, and a very interesting plot. This trilogy is written in an easy style, suitable to everyone and makes a very good read. ...
Advantages: Epic character based fantasy Disadvantages: plot slightly weak
First thing you should know about the Dragonlance series is that there are many many books in it. There are however only a handful that are classed as 'First Tier'. What that means is that only these are the books that have been written by the original authors (MargaretWeis and TracyHickman) and they tell the main story. All the other Dragonlance books tell other stories that are in some way related to the main story theme (ie. books about each of the characters origins).
The Dragonlance Chronicles is a trilogy containing the books: 'Dragons of Autumn Twilight', 'Dragons of Winter Night', and 'Dragons of Spring Dawning'.
The Chronicles is an story much in the mold of your Tolkien-esque fantasy. There are the heroes, the bad guys, and the heroes are on a quest to rid the world of evil. What makes Dragonlance slightly different is ...
Advantages: fall straight into another world and forget about the dismal one that you are in now Disadvantages: you'll be a hermit when reading the book and your social life would have to suffer for a while
to my
heart!) Anyway, MargaretWeis and TracyHickman
are legends. They co-wrote many of the books,
sometimes separately, and it has proved to be a
hit everywhere!
It is basically about a group of people who go
on adventures, but you may think this sounds crap,
but I really don't know how to relay the fact that
these are the best books written! The whole book,
people, races, dialects, countries and the world
and everything possible is created from scratch in
an imaginary world. In this group there are Tanis,
the bastard elf... which is half human, half elf,
Tasselhof or Tas, which is a kender (I'll explain
all later), Sturm who is a knight of Solamnia,
Caramon and Raistlin who are twins but sooooooooo
different and so forth.
In these books, since everything is created from
scratch, there are all ...
