Wella vivality (TV AD)
I had two main phobias in life, one being a fear of loose hairs (you know the single straggly hair lurking around in the sink or worse still on your dinner plate (I wonder if there is a name for this phobia)): and the other being heights (I am the coward who hides behind a magazine when ‘don’t try this at home’ comes on TV). But now I have three, thanks to those kind people at the advertising department for Wella shampoos.
You’ve probably seen the advert for their latest shampoo ‘vivality’, although possibly you may not of as it’s only been on my screen a few times.
It’s the one where a chap (James Gooding (Kylie Mingoue’s ex-boyfriend)) goes in a restaurant and orders some soup. A pretty young waitress (Stewart-eyes wide shut) brings his soup to his table, and guess what? He finds a loose straggly hair in the soup – YUK!! (a nightmare)! Never mind it doesn’t worry him – Oh no! He fancies the waitress, which is probably the reason why he never complained. He carefully places the hair in a tissue and wraps it, to save as his only ‘keep sake’ of the woman who’s just turned his head!
But as he rises to leave the restaurant, and turns to get one last glimpse of the beauty whose hair he now has in his hand – a twist- the chef who is a strapping man with exactly the same hair as he’s dream woman. Whose hair is he holding in his hand now?
Why do I dislike this advert, mainly because of my ‘phobia’, but also partly because of the image it creates for anyone sitting down to eat their own soup or tea (after all hairs don’t only fall into soup). Whoever thought this advert up in the first place needs a pay cut or a hair in their soup. There could have been far better ways to draw our attention to the shampoo, rather than this disgusting anti social way. That said it has worked-otherwise I wouldn’t be writing this opinion!?!?
Having the ‘hair phobia’ I dislike this advert so much that I logged into the Advertising complaints web site to register my distaste. However, I was short of a few details (namely date, time, etc the advert was shown etc) -so failed in my complaint. But I know I am not the only one who has found this advert ‘unpleasant’, when I have mentioned it to some friends and family they have also agree another choice should have been made. Adverts are supposed to memorable, but for reasons that you would want to buy the product. This advert does the complete opposite for me, a product to be avoided in my house just in case…IT MAKES YOUR HAIR FALL OUT!
