Full review

Wesergold are a leading German manufacturer of fruit juices, who I have only recently discovered thanks to my local corner shop. The varieties available include apple, which is the subject of this review, pear, tomato, orange, red grape, pineapple and grapefruit. I have since seen it in supermarkets as well, so it is fairly widely available.

Taste

I drink gallons of fruit juice in attempt to get my recommended daily amount of fluid, and I am one of those fussy people who find water incredibly dull, fizzy or not. This apple juice is not the “cloudy” variety but the clear one, and has a clear, crisp taste which is not too sweet and sickly. The colour is a little dubious – it has the same orangy colour as British Rail tea, but don’t be put off! Its delicious chilled.

Packaging and Price

Its distinctive and royal blue, with red lettering (except for the Pear juice which is an orange/beige carton.) Large picture of a big green apple on the front gives you a helpful hint as to what is inside. The text is in German though – so strictly speaking this is Apfel juice. It comes in one litre cartons, and the apple (and grape) only costs 65p (although most others are 85p. This could just be my local shops peculiarities!) So its very good value at that price, and I would say it is much nicer than the cheaper Tesco value apple juice, or any other value supermarket brands which would probably beat it on price.

Nutritional Breakdown

100 percent fruit content, screams the carton. However, as with most fruit juices, it is made from concentrate, not from freshly squeezed juice. I’m afraid most of the information on the carton is in german, but here is what I can decipher:

Energy per 100ml 43 kcal, protein 01.g, carboydrate 10.2 g, fat 0.1g.
(Um, I guess that’s actually quite a high sugar content then.)

Ah well, its got to be better than cups of tea with three sugars!

Verdict:
Very refreshing, good price (when you think a can of fizzy juice will set you back 45p anyway, Id rather have a litre of this every day!) – and although not as good for you as fresh juice like Tropiciana et al, its more affordable, tastier than water, and a good thirst quencher. Recommended.
