Over the many years of West Ham United's existance, they have been known to be a very entertaining team to watch, always wanting to either hit teams on the counter-attack or just attack them with pace, now a few years after the wonderful team that got relegated in 2003 we still have the basis of a very fast attacking team that the reletively new manger Alan Pardew has created. They consist of many British players that most of them have huge potential to go on to do something in the near future. Our central midfielder is the England U21 captain, Nigel Reo-Coker and our centre back, Anton Ferdinand is considered to have the potential to reach the heights of his big brother Rio. Surely this team is good enough to be European regulars in the coming years. But the question is how well would we have been doing now if we had not got relegated 2 and a half years ago. Players like Joe Cole, Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdinand, Jermaine Defoe, Michael Carrick, all the fantastic young talent to grace the Upton Park pitch. The team we had then did not seem to be the best together, but individually they all seemed to be the best young talent in the country at that current point.
In the 2001/02 season we started badly, not winning for a few games under the new manager Glenn Roeder. After the dodgy period we picked ourselves up and over the season we kept our form and got to 7th in the season. The next season started exactly the same, we started badly with even more bad games to begin the season with, but then this time around we had run out of luck and we stayed bottom of the table for a long period of time. Though the fantastic West Ham fans kept their faith in the team and even though we were bottom at Christmas, the dreaded landmark, the fans believced that we were the team that was going to break code and stay up. West Ham had had the worst start in the Premiership ever and relegation looked inevitable. Our star players were not performing as a team and some terrible losses including the 6-0 loss to Man U in the Fa Cup added greater despair to the West Ham Premiership outlook. Though one player shined through in all this despair and that was our very own Paulo Di Canio. His great passion was the shining light in the tunnel of relegation. Though a fall out between Paulo and Glenn Roeder left the job to young Jermaine Defoe and Freddie Kanoute. They seemed to combine well at first, but inturuption from Paulo as Glenn Roeder couldn't decide who to pick stopped anything happening.
The centre of midfield was also a problem aswell, though we may have had Joe Cole and Michael Carrick in midfield we still had 2 problems, 1, Carrick hadn't been trained to play in a defencive role yet and the combination between him and the Flairy attacking player Joe Cole, just would not work, and 2, Cole was being made to play on the left-hand side of midfield because no-one seemed to realise that left wingers play on the left hand side of midfield. So Lomas was put into midfield with Cole on the left and Sinclair on the right
This seemed fine until the attention turned to the defence, which seemed more like they were trying to hide than defend. Everytime the ball was played anywhere near them they panicked, flapped and made mistakes in a comical fashion. The problem was, that we had the clumsiest defence in the world. Repka recently now left for Sparta Prague, was not used to Premiership football and this was probably due to the fact he never palyed as he was serving a suspension every other day. Then we turn to Christian Dailly, this one is currently still at the club and good knows how, we should have sent him back to Scotland years ago. This player would probably flap, panik and run away from a feather. In all seriouness, if the ball was anywhere near Dailly every fan knew that there was goal for the opposite team coming. And then to add yet more misery, these 2 players cost us 7 million pounds overall together. Repka 5.5M and Dailly 1.5M.
Taking a break from the constant digging at the defence we move on to the main reason we fell of the Premiership bandwagon into Division 1 (Now the Championship of course). The reason we went down was because of those stupid, absolutely terrible Mackems of 2003...... They were absolutely terrible. At the moment this just seems a normal dig at a bad team, but I asure you, this makes sense. The story continues after Christmas for the Hammers and we had hit peak form, the kind of football everyone expected from us, the football we had played the previous year bar the first few games. We were winning well and had then got ourselves into 4th from bottom, scrapping it out between us, Bolton and Leeds. We kept winning and so did they, but on the other side, Sunderland were constantly losing, the more we won, the more they lost and the further away the teams above got because they picked up wasy points of the bottom team, any team near the bottom would find it hard to stay up were the target was being raised by the poor football of West Brom and mainly Sunderland losing. It all came down to the last few games, as we lost to Bolton and Leeds scraped a draw out on Arsenal, the bar was still being raised higher.
The last day came and , the situation was this, we had to win and Bolton had to lose and we would stay up. 40 points at the beginning of all seasons up to now was the mark to stay up and stayed consistant. We already had 42 on the last day, but because of Sunderland we needed yet more points to stay up.
As we all know we did go down , we sold all of our brilliant young talent, and the money went to debt. Pardew took over in mid season in 2004 and got alot of stick over the coming months. All credit to him aswell as I included was one who was always critisicing him, but he has now got us up and has built a team that is doing fantastically well considering our sitaution.
Think about it, how well could we have done if we kept all those players including Rio and Lampard. I believe we would have been a Champions League contending team and if it wasn't for those Mackems we would know right now, the same though seems to be happening this season aswell, Sunderland have only 5 points at Christmas and don't look to be getting any more.
West Ham United to me will always be thought of as the team that could have been.
...End, you are surrounded by West Ham Fans. In school, you either supported West Ham or you were not part of the cool gang. The thing was, they were not particularly a good team so I supported Arsenal and took a lot of wrath because of it. True, they do seem to be improving and have some real exciting players now. Kanute is blinding. He can turn it on on the right day but he is overshadowed by one of the best players in the league, Paulo Di Canio. ... ...can show moments of genious while being dogged by his violent and uncontrollable temper. He at last seems to have settled in the premiership and found a real home at Upton Park. The youngsters really have shone through too. Rio Ferdinand went to Leeds for a profit of £18 million that I expect will go towards new players. Frank Lampard is an excellent future prospect as is young Joe Cole. The imports that Harry Redknapp has bought in the past have ...

Advantages: Capable of sublime on the floor football Disadvantages: Can't defend, can't play ugly football when it's needed
...as they could? West Ham have one of the smallest squads in the premiership. West Ham are not in debt. It's difficult to blame the board, especially when you see the plight of Leeds, and those clubs so royally stuffed by the collapse of ITV digital. We look certainties to go down this season, and if we do, then we won't be facing financial ruin. Then again, if the board had invested in players, would we be in this position in the first place? Let's ... ...it's always like that at West Ham. I wish I could direct my bile at a contributory factor to our spiral towards relegation, but, it's a real mixed bag of potential targets. Perhaps this season we were destined to be generally crap.
Its all very well trying to play pretty football, and keeping the ball on the ground, but for the next two months things have got get very ugly indeed or we're simply not going to survive the premiership. The Academy ...

...player protests over red cards, West Ham are being charged. Ok maybe under the new rules West Ham deserve to be charged, they did protest rather nastily to the ref. But, what about Arsenal, when Vierra got sent off the Arsenal players were just as bad, as were Man U's in the charity shield.
Once again the FA are annoying people by not applying rules consistently. Di Cannio did nothing wrong and to face a ban again smacks of victimisation. Apart ...

Advantages: Cockney charm, stylish football Disadvantages: Howard Hugheslike tight fisted board
West Ham Utd have a chairman named T.W Brown FCIS,AII,FCCA, and well, that's about it, the said Mr Brown is to put it politely media shy, you never see him interviewed on tv, hear him on radio, or see his face in team photos or newspapers.
The mysterious Mr Brown and his equally shy board of directors, are perhaps one of the key reasons why West Ham are the Premier League's bridesmaid and never the bride. Harry Redknapp, manager and general salt ... ...youth system in place at West Ham, is largely due to Redknapp's influence.
At present West Ham play some flamboyant and attractive passing football, most eminating form Paulo Di Canio's magic boots. The defence is strong and bolstered by England veterans Stuart Pierce and Nigel Winterburn, both nearing 40 and the aforementioned Rio. Attack wise French Under 21 international Freddy Kanoute and Croatian Davor Suker, join Di Canio in making a very ...

At the tender age of 6, I was a tomboy who built tree houses, had a coveted selection of marbles and one of the best toy car collections on my estate. My indoctrination into the sport was a slow and subtle one and I was aware of football in as much as the boys at school would occasionally let me kick the ball around with them.
Then three golden idols arose to lead, what seemed to me, the entire ... ...proud tear. They played for West Ham United, therefore obviously the greatest club in existence; therefore, I have to support them. And so it began.
Had someone sat me down and explained that this success didn’t necessarily follow us in the league; had they told me the agonies that I would suffer at the hands of the club season after season; had they tried to explain the depression that relegation would cause; had they said that we could fell ...

one FA cup to their credit, also way back in 1947. In order to press for honours, away results need to improve.
The squad is relatively youthful and has a lot of potential. After losing the now much-touted prospect Jermaine Defoe recently to WestHamUnited and only being compensated to the tune of £1 million, they also have good prospects in Danny Shittu, and young attacker Kevin Lisbie. The stadium could stand some improvement but is adequate for the moment. ...
