West Indies, the world beaters and giants of cricket of yesteryears had many stars in the galaxy, who with their allround performance brought glory to their country and the game of cricket. The three W's: Weekes, Walcot and Worrel and the three S's; Smith, Sobers and Solomon: all of them stamped their names in the record books of cricket bringing kudos to their native land. Another cricketing star who had shone with the same glitter on the cricketing horizon is Vivian Richards who was a hard core player tough on the ground and gentle off the field. V stands for victory and for Vivian Richards.
Isacc Vivian Alexander Richards is one of the charismatic and talented batsmen ever to play cricket. Born in St John’s, Antigua in 1952, Vivian’s cricketing talents blossomed at a very early age. The "Master Blaster" had a carefree approach with great self-confidence and his batting strength was colossal. He was an attacking player with breath-taking aggression and he never took time to demolish any kind of bowling. His stroke play was a treat to watch and his footwork was dexterous. His judgement of the line and length of deliveries was thoroughly quick and he used to execute very special shots all around the wicket. With a muscular build, astute reflexes and hawk-like concentration, he demonstrated his batting prowess throughout the cricket world.
He played his maiden test in 1974-75 series with India at Bangalore. In the second test at New Delhi, he scored a scintillating unbeaten century with 192 glorious runs. He smashed the formidable Indian spin attack and hit 6 sixes all over the ground in his cavalier innings, a very memorable one for many years to come. He inherited a very strong West Indian team from Clive Lloyd and he won many matches with his shrewd and masterminded captaincy.
He continued his batting magic with every test cricket-playing nation. With 24 hundreds and 45 half centuries, he was second only to Sir Garfield Sobers. He was associated with many record-breaking partnerships. One of his most memorable batting displays was in 1985-86 home series at Antigua against England, when he scored his hundred in 56 balls in 81 minutes. The maestro smote 7 sixes in that magical innings, sending the fielders to run helter-skelter in search of the ball, and making the bowlers exhausted of their ideas.
When the days of one-day cricket dawned, Vivian Richards transformed himself to suit the requirements of the game. He amassed 6721 runs in 187 one-dayers with 118 wickets and 101 catches. He stamped himself as one of the greatest players in one-day games. His fielding was superb, very agile and a feast to the eyes. In the 1975 world cup in England, his match winning fielding earned him many laurels. In the finals, he was instrumental for the brilliant run outs of the Chappel brothers, paving the way to win the world cup. In 1997, Vivian Richards was chosen the Wisden Cricketer of the Year
West Indies team greatly depended on him in emergent situations, which he surmounted with utmost ability and led his team to thumping victories. His presence in the team was that of a supreme commander who directed his army with devout sincerity and authority. Vivian Richards will remain a legend in cricket and will inspire the younger generation throughout the world, because he always believed that "when the going gets tough, the tough gets going"....

WEST INDIAN CRICKET IN THE PAST
When the West Indies first played test cricket their captain was a white man, which was very unusual.
The first cricketing superstar was Sir Learie Constantine. He was a brilliant fielder.
The team in the 1950s was the first great West Indian team. The 3 Ws were in the side: Clyde Walcott, Everton Weekes and Sir Frank Worrell. All 3 batsmen were devastating hitters but each had their own ... ...Australia.
At this stage West Indies was the best team in the world.
In 1966 the Windies toured England and won the test series.
But in 1969 the Windies lost the test series in England 1-0. Several players were getting old and were replaced with younger players.
1973 TOUR OF ENGLAND
The first time I saw the West Indies live on TV was during the 1973 season.
They trounced England 2-0 in the test series.
The team was Fredericks, Headley, Kanhie, ...

Advantages: Great bowler. Great sportsman Disadvantages: He's retired.
...of cricketing history as the West Indies ultra fast bowler, Courtney Walsh, ended his test career with bowling figures of 3 for 62 as his team beat the South Africans in the fifth and final test on his home ground in Jamaica. These final 3 wickets brought his total to a world record of 519 wickets in a test career spanning 14 years. But he may not be finished yet as he has declared that should his country really need him, he will respond.

Cricket enthusiasts all over the world will miss Courtney Walsh and I’m sure that all cricket lovers will join me in wishing him a happy retirement from test cricket and success in whatever he chooses to do in the future.

...the main threat for the West indies and it is hard to know hw they will survive without them.
but also it is hard to hard to know how cricket will fair with the loss of not only two of the greatest cricketers ever but also teo of the great characters of the game.
The England team quite rightly gave them a guard of honour onto the ground and showed the great respect that both players have from their fellow professionals.
It was a sad day for cricket ...

Advantages: Great skill as a batsman Disadvantages: Distracted
...There is talk of the West Indies sending for a sports psychologist apparently to try and improve the mental state of the West Indies players and Lara in particular.
To see him bat now compared with three years ago and you see very little foot movement and consequently he is not in position to play his shots. It is said that Lara is distracted these days by events in his personal life and that he does not work as hard as he once did. It was known ... ...his home in Trinidad as he was homesick and had business commitments. Even the worlds best batsmen need to practice and feel the ball coming on to the bat. Unless Lara works again at his batting and devotes himself to it he is unlikely to recover. This may not be just a loss of form this could be the end of Brian Lara as a test batsman. ...

Advantages: Some big names Disadvantages: Too old, too inconsistent
...the last few years the West Indies have gone from a team to be feared and respected to a team that could be beaten by Zimbabwe easily. Their main stars are either too old or too inconsistent to provide their team with any major impetus. The new influx to the team has as a large point been disappointing and one of their most consistent players at the moment is the wicket keeper Ridley Jacobs. Sadly for Lara he is struggling to keep up with the hopes ...

Advantages: It's about time Disadvantages: weak opposition
it looks as if England are going to beat the WestIndies after thirty long years. But let's be honest the WestIndies batting leaves a lot to be desired.
Frankly they have batted at times no better than a county side and England SHOULD have won in reality.
If you take out Brian Lara who is world class no one else looks the part and England have beaten a poor team.
The glory days of yesteryear are long gone for the Windies and judging by what is to come in the bowling and batting departments it will be a number of years before they are once again a powerful Test playing nation. ...

England have been bowling there best ever this morning. West Indian top-order batting in a superb performance in the field on the first morning of the crucial Fourth Test at Headingley.Campbell appeared positive and Griffith edgy as WestIndies went in to bat; the positive one was first to go, however, driving overenthusiastically at a swinging ball from Gough and slicing a neck-high catch straight to Trescothick in the gully. WestIndies were 11 for one, Campbell 8. Caddick beat the bat frequently, but perhaps pitched a little too short to take wickets; Gough was more expensive but more dangerous, although he did not break through again. ...

finally, england have not just won a match but a whole test series against another nation. it was very much a bowlers series, with wickets tumbling as often as runs are scored.in the final test, i left the room and westindies were on 52-0.i returned 30 minutes later to find the score amazingly on 59-5! england bowled well all series, with good performances by gough and white and caddick as well as cork and although ambrose and walsh fought back bravely, they were rather let down by their support bowlers. WELL DONE ENGLAND and keep it up against kenya and pakistan! ...
