First let me start by saying I have two of these external hard drives (EHD). I like the drive itself, but have had problems connecting it. I read other reviews and people complained about not being able to connect. I had no problems initially and thought they were just doing something wrong. Nope. Read for more details.
I had one at my previous home that had a network. I plugged it in and it worked like a charm. I backed up my personal hard drives and one that stored all my business files. I used SyncBack to do my nightly backups. I loved it. Then I took it on vacation and lost the power cord. Western Digitial sales department didn't have one in stock, but they checked the tech support side and found one to sell me. I appreciated that. By the time I received the cord, I had moved my office and we set up my network slightly different. Since then I've had NO luck connecting this to my network. I've had my corporate tech support guy to my office and he says it can't be done. In addition, my hard drive crashed and I had to reinstall the software to even connect to it using a cat5e cord to my laptop. I can get to it, but only if I have it directly connected to my laptop. I've researched online at both the Western Digital site and elsewhere and I have found that other people have the same problem. Some of have found a complicated solution, but I still haven't been able to connect. I bought the second one before I realized I was going to have this issue. The drive is easily accessible but comes with a program you don't really need. I don't care for that. Supposedly I had to install it in order to see it on the network. I don't use it otherwise and it's only a trial version of a program that allows you to connect to the EHD when you're not connected to your network.
I gave this a three because I was easily able to connect the first time and it worked fine until I moved. Otherwise, I would have given it a 1 or a 2. I still don't have network accessibility and can only use a cat5 cable to get to my data. A pain when I use a laptop.
Advantages: Cheap for a NAS. Looks good in the living room. Disadvantages: Sells it with remote access but the access is limited.
...In their infinite wisdom, Western Digital have decided that you will not be able to access certain licensed file type (MP3 being the most obvious example) using the remote access software.
Although I have not had any experience of the problem, another review elsewhere has reported problems with the device not picking up an IP from the DHCP server. If you don't ever turn it off this shouldn't be a problem though.
The device also has a USB port on ... ...external HDD for extra storage. It would have been nice if this could have been used to attach it directly to a PC but at this price you can't have everything.
At around £135 it is very cheap for a NAS device, you'd be hard pressed to find a 500GB drive on its own for that price. Overall I am happy with mine.
One final work of warning for Linux users. Although this undoubtedly runs on an embedded Linux system, I have had problems streaming MP3 ...
