Down by the River...
Review of River Of No Return DVD by KarenUK

Advantages: Marilyn Monroe looking beautiful and singing well, good cast, beautiful views
Disadvantages: Some dull bits, it's a Western!

...No Business Like Showbusiness and River of No Return. The latter is a 1954 Western filmed in Canada and co-starring Robert Mitchum. Marilyn plays a saloon singer called Kay Weston, while Rory Calhoun is her partner Harry. They seem happy together, but it soon becomes obvious that they have different priorities in life. Harry is obsessed with making money. He is a gambler who is selfish, greedy and not very likeable. Kay, however, is sweet, maternal, ...
...sings the title track - River of No Return (in a gaudy yellow and red costume I don't like much) and Down in the Meadow, but my favourite is I'm Gonna File My Claim. For this number, she wears a long green velvet dress (don't like this one either), in a similar style to the red one, with a high split leg and a strappy top. This song is faster paced, so Marilyn gets to move more and perform and dance, which is very enjoyable to watch. She works the ... Read review

Review of Sukiyaki Western Django DVD by Queequeg77

Advantages: It's Miike, making a Japanese Western!
Disadvantages: The dialogue sounds amateurish.

Yikes. I used to be a Takashi Miike fan, until I watched this film that is. What can I say? The film is a mess. The story and the way that it unfolds, is all over the place, and Tarantino's performance is awful. Now I might have been able to forgive all of that, call it a 'genre piece'. Heck, Miike had the look of the film down pat. A Japanese western, very novel. The thing is I just couldn't (and still can't) forgive the fact that the Japanese actors ...
...film for me in two ways: 1. I love Japanese cinema, I'd much rather hear the actors speaking their first language to be honest. Sue me. 2. Even if I looked past that fact, these particular actors seem pretty 'uncomfortable' speaking English. That may even be an understatement. This second point absolutely ruins the picture for me. It throws me out of the ex perience, and leaves a very bad taste in the mouth. That's all there is to say. Never mind ... Read review

Not to be missed
Review of Deadwood - Series 1 - Complete DVD by colin_worldcup

Advantages: Great entertainment.
Disadvantages: Too addictive!

...previously only flicked over to Deadwood when it was on the TV be it waiting for something else to start or during breaks I had obviously struggled to pick up what was going on. However after buying season 1 (for £15-bargain!) I found myself asking why I had been so stupid as not to have watched any of the 3 season run previously! As I don't believe in giving strorylines away I won't touch on that side of things, If you are interested and act on ... Read review

Nothing like Clint Eastwood
Review of 3:10 To Yuma DVD by galatico1

Advantages: Shoot out scenes
Disadvantages: Not a great role for Russell Crowe

...be expected from the western 3:10 to Yuma with such actors as Russell Crowe(such films as Gladiator) and Christian Bale(Batman) however after the successfulness of James Mangold Walk the Line, this film has failed to provide a adequate supply of the thrilling scenes which Westerns have come to give us. A un-realistic close bond which is created between these unfamiliar foes, which blossoms throughout the film at least adds something different to ...
...and mouse chase between Russell Crowe's gang and Christian Bale, make out for a ending which was to be expected by many of the viewers, after both actors successfulness, this film is a step back in their amazing line up to films in which they have acted and will hope to forget and move on. ... Peckinpah's brutal vision sees the light of day
Review of Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid (Special Edition) by martyn73

Advantages: see the film the way it was meant to be seen
Disadvantages: none

...look at the legend of Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Released in this new form it adds extra scenes which give more character study although in places it does seem like there are still parts missing. Nevertheless it is a beautifully shot film which due to the subject matter has a sense of inevitable doom about it. The violence that is so much a part of Peckinpah's films is here in its full glory serving to show the true brutality of the Old West. ... Read review
