I have just started a first year Law degree course at the Regents Campus and am thoroughly disappointed by most aspects of the University. The teaching staff are generally unhelpful and unenthusiastic. One tutor in particular shouts at us for one hour a week regardless of our efforts and then consistently asks us if we 'feel humiliated yet.' My personal tutor is only available 2 hours a week, and by appointment only.
Lectures and tutorials are badly organised. There are regular problems with the power-points, print outs, staff absence etc: Which only acts to further confuse what is a pretty challenging subject already.
The atmosphere among the students in general is, unsurprisingly, a depressing one and not helped by the poor quality of the Student Union. The range of societies is limited and the union bar rarely has special events on and closes at 11pm.
The University accommodation I have been allocated is in an unsafe corner of North London, where we do not dare go out alone as we are sick of getting harassed daily (grabbed, groped and robbed). Even a local policeman suggested to us that we try and relocate for our own safety but unfortunately we are tied into a contract that doesn't allow us to leave. Having visited friends at International House in Waterloo, this doesn't seem any better in terms of safety.
Five of my flat-mates and three of my classmates regret coming to this university, like me, and at least four of us are actively trying to relocate for our second year. I do not think London in general is a good place to be a student, as it is over-priced, unsafe and lacks the student-community spirit that makes your time at University memorable. The University of Westminster in particular makes the assumption that it's students are already familiar with London (as many appear to be from here), and offers little support outside of academia.
Advantages: Dynamic course with personal tutoring, top range industry contact Disadvantages: Harrow is not so great, student union is rubbish
...campus.
The University of Westminster has 4 campuses around London: Baker Street, Marylebone, Cavendish and Harrow. This review is on the Harrow Campus only.
THE COURSE
The course I studied was based in both the Business school and Creative Industries School as it encompassed both. There were pros and cons to this. That, combined with the fact that when I started the course it was only in its 3rd year running ever meant that things weren't always ... ...to the other University of Westminster libraries on the other 3 campuses and books can even be delivered from those campuses to the Harrow campus. For my course, my tutors directed me towards more specialised business libraries in central London which are free to use, e.g. the City Business Library.
The Fashion and Media archives at the top of the library have been kept well and are top notch. The best feature of the library in my humble opinion.

OK the campus IS spread over quite a large area, but this is a small price to pay for what you get in return. ...

...experience of the University of Westminster when it was formerly
PCL (Polytechnic of Central London) was dire, perhaps this was because I was on a part time course commuting into Paddington?
I don't know whether the facilities have improved, I found the teaching staff depressed, lacking enthusiasm, and under a lot of stress. Also many members of staff were part time often without
degree level qualifications. If the students weren't forced by employers ...

...to get a degree from Westminster University. Getting the right degree from a good University these days is very important and Westminster University cannot provide it (again based on my experience). Below some general thoughts after attending business related degree from that University.
I have graduated with business degree. Very low level of teaching. I have started similar degree outside the UK, where level of teaching in secondary school could ... ...get someone who stuck at Westminster for 10+ years and has some great communications skills with students, but with out of date knowledge. On the other young tutors who cannot put relevant models together and make this great teaching work. Sometimes it is fully understandable why tutors have this attitude, many students attitude is awful, but this is where Westminster is going, this is their target market.
So if you really want to gain some business ...

Quick review of Westminster University
The University of Westminster in general is an excellent, inclusive place to study, with highly-thought of research centres in several disciplines, and an admirable public service ethos, which means that it grants discounts and progression scholarships to a fair number of people who do courses there. I did an MA in public sector housing at Westminster in 1998, and so was quite pleased to be returning there this year to commence a GDL (graduate diploma in law) post-grad law conversion course. I would heartily recommend it to people like myself who work full-time, and who wish to study part-time to improve their career prospects. ...

Advantages: great career prospects Disadvantages: not entirely about fashion.
I am currently at Manchester Metropolitan University, Studying Fashion Buying for Retail at the Hollings Campus. There are only a few University's which offer this course, the others are London College of Fashion, Westminster and Lancashire University.
I decided on The manchester course because it sounded like it was more specialised on the buying aspects of Fashion which interested me the most.
Now i have started the course, i am not entirely sure how i feel about it.
I expected it to be very much about fashion, however the course lecturers are mainly economists, and do not have much experience within the fashion industry.... i have therfore found that it is very much business orientated.
The degree is a 3 year BSc course, however you do have the choice of doing it as a 2 year HND, then if you pass the two years you can ...
Advantages: Fresh air, yet 30 mins from the night life of Central London - great facilities and dedicated staff. Disadvantages: None I can think of!
I came here to take a one year Masters course after reading a Psychology degree at the University of Westminster thinking it would be an "in" to all sorts of careers. Well to be honest it wasn't.
This may have been for a number of factors, for example being a "mature student' but the one thing it wasn't was because of a lack of technical skill or dedication of the lecturers.
This was a VERY intensive course and we really felt the pressure, yet through it all ther was never any feeling that the slowest were being left behind, or that the fastest were not being stretched.
The college is exceptionally well served by computing facilities being the recipient af many grants from the major computing companies.
The campus is beautiful, set not too far out of London, but yet in rolling fields. The accomodation is not luxurious, but ...

This ops more on AI than WestminsterUniversity, but there was no-where no put it!
Artificial Intelligence is here - and if it ain't in your house, it's gonna be within 50 years.
AI will make some of the biggest, if not the most important, changes to easth as we know it. It could be able to figure out how to reach distant stars, or cure cancer, or create holographic images of what you like to see most.
It'd probably come from Japan, and be in a really stupid language. It'd probably come with limits, and shouldn't be able to go past it's basic programming - like don't kill humans or self detruct unstable uranium atoms in NY.
It'd help really old people who are lonely, and fine innovative ideas, rather than letting them stare out of the window all day. It'd give someone for them to talk to about the good old war days ...
